Default Thinking of Joining the military

So, lately I have been thinking about joining the military, most likely Air Force. I have pretty much decided I want to be a cop, so from what I've read my choice for AF so be Security Forces? I am just mainly wondering what general everyday AF life is like. Thanks to anyone who chimes in, and thanks for your service!

My best advice... Take a few hours after school, or on the weekend to spend some time at the local or closest VA. You can volunteer, etc, but the folks involved with the VA will give you both sides of the story. The good and the bad.

Don't listen to the recruiter schpeel, and give both sides of the discussion a chance.

It's a great life for some folks, and for some it's just not a good fit.

You might go to your local VFW or American Legion post
best time may be right around NOON, on a weekend
ask to speak to a post officer & shake their hand & ask your questions, after explaining what you are thinking about doing

that post officer will buy you a beverage & explain pretty much in detail everything that you want to know, they may ask a Retired Air Force person over, most of the members in these posts were LIFERS, ( 20 year military )

don't belly up to the bar, stand a few feet away

I can't help with your question, but I can say that I still regret not joining when I had the chance. I think it would have been a great experience and would have done me good in many ways. Most vets I know - other than Vietnam guys-, seem to have a good overall feeling about it. Again, this is an ignorant statement from me, but I really think I would have made a career out of it.

I won't comment more, except that i spent 3 years & 3 months on an aircraft carrier
most of it during viet nam
i got to see both the old & new way the Navy does things
I do Not regret for a minute going into the Navy
learned a lot about life, explosives, etc

My cousin went into the AIR FORCE at the same time, he was stationed in Texas, Maine, Korea, & Germany, he had no complaints, lucky so & so

If you're considering going into law enforcement... check out the Coast Guard...

It's the smallest of the services, and you can do more than JUST be a cop. If you are able to get boarding team member, then Boarding officer qualified it can be quite a rush.

It's not your usual busting up bar fights, filling out reports on vandalism, or busting speeders. You could be checking safety equipment on a commercial fishing vessel one day, checking registration info on Joe Boater the next, and on the 3rd day saving someone's life out on the open water.

Boot camp was pretty much a joke. 8 wks of getting yelled at, learning how to be a part of a team, etc. There is the usual bs of push ups, sit ups, running etc, but after a while it's not that big a deal.

trade school or "A" school can be a bit tough, dependent upon what your job specialty is, but it's all doable

good luck,

Exco

Hello, Any branch of service you decide is great! I was not a career soilder but I was around everything I wanted trained in and like anything else, you have good places to be and then you have the bad, but no matter where you go, you have support, back up and you are a part of what has kept our Country free. Besides when you get out and want to get in police work, when your are standing in line with the others and you tell them you were an MP in the service, you will not have to explain.

I say go for it. I joined the Marines and what I've learned is no matter what branch you join it will all benefit you.

The first year or so you work for the military getting trained and taught how the system works and how to get along with it. Then after that you make the military work for you, especially now.

Getting paid to go to college and get a degree is awesome. I am also married so having a secure income and a house for my wife and I was a huge plus. On top of that depending on your field you will get hands on experience you can take with you back to the civilian world that will put you ahead or at least make you competitive with others going after the same jobs.

All in all if you are in a good position to join the military and feel up to it I'd go for it. Unless you have connections, no where else are you going to get the benefits and experience right off the bat. I am 20 years old now and I was 1 of 3 people that joined the military out of my graduating class of 358. They all are in college working part time trying to keep some money away to pay for their debt of getting that education.

In the end the decision is yours I just figured I'd share my side. Good luck!
