Unhappy Sad...

Last night I was on my way to get my wife from work when a handsome golden lab mix ran out of a side street right in front of me.
I slammed on my brakes but there was nothing I could do. I hit him right in the centre of my truck... He went under and the rear tires road over.
For a minute I thought we had lucked out some how because I saw him get up and run back up the street in my rear view. I turned around and went where he did.
With my heart breaking, I found the dog with his owner crouching over him. His owner, some other people and I were there as the poor guy took his last breath.
I felt so helpless and as a animal lover and dog owner myself, there was nothing I could say... Nothing I could have done. If I had only left earlier, or later, I would not have been part of this tragedy.

Very sorry to hear that man, totally sucks because it really tears you up, messes with your head. Unfortunately, I can relate, happened to me a few years ago, another reason I don't like driving at night but I had just come out of a pretty sharp curve in my Jeep, only going the posted 45 mph but all of a sudden this big dog seemingly came out of nowhere, didn't see him until it was too late and I was already on him. Not even sure what kind of dog it was but I felt horrible, heck I feel bad when I hit a squirrel! I'm an animal lover and dog owner myself and I know how helpless it feels to be in that situation, really sorry man.

There aren't words to sympathize with the guilt you're carrying from this tragedy. Rest easy knowing you tried your best to stop in time. Don't dwell over the what-ifs because there was nothing you did wrong. It's an unfortunate situation for anyone to be put in.

I hope the owners were civil about the aftermath...

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that. Just know that there is nothing you could've done to prevent it, i.e. not your fault. Owner should have had the dog on the leash.

That sucks. I have launched into evasive maneuvers to avoid squirrels, possums, frogs, you name it. And you always have to stop to help the turtle get across the highway, lol. But sometimes there is nothing you can do and it sounds like this was one of those times.

100% agree with this. I cringe when I see animals around any roadway.

Even though you could not have done any more to prevent it, I know your heart is heavy, shadow.

My wife works at an animal hospital, and she sees this kind of tragedy almost every day, unfortunately.

As careful as we are as drivers, we cannot account for any animal who has no idea of the concept of our human world and its roads and fast-moving vehicles.

And to address the member who suggested "he should have been on a leash": Accidents happen. A gate is inadvertently left open, a child or visitor that doesn't know lets the animal out, just about anything can happen to facilitate these kinds of tragedies.

These things happen. The only thing that is better is that it could have been a kid. We have plenty of Honda would be tuner kids on our block and I have been dreading the day one of them hits a small kid. I have seen them easily hitting 80 kmph (50mph) + on a short strip of street before the stop sign and this after starting from a 90* corner that is a blind one for the rest of the street. I've even tried talking to them about it but nothing sinks in. Even offered my driveway to the cops to sit in to catch them to no avail.

I too can sympathize with this unfortunate situation. There are rare occasions that things such as this cannot be avoided. It very well may be an instance of sheer misfortune and not the fault of the animal's owner nor yourself.

My animals have always been well behaved but there have been occasions where they do the unexpected and act like Paul and someone left the cell door open.

As careful as the owner may have been to protect his animal, and as careful as you may have been as a responsible driver, fate cannot be avoided by sheer definition.

I offer my condolences to both you and the animals owner. I commend you on taking the time to follow the animal.

When I was younger I had a pet escape and never had the closure of knowing that it was an unavoidable accident and not some individual had done it deliberately.

Closure is a big part of moving past an unfortunate mishap and I hope both you and the owner had at least that between yourselves in a civil manner.
