Default Installed Automatic Transmission Valve Body - will not shift.

1997 Dodge Ram Truck
Issue : just installed Automatic Transmission Valve Body - Now the Tranny will not shift from Park to anything.
Possible Cause: I removed the assy while the truck was in park.
- Read after the fact, that the Truck should have been in 1st gear before removing assy.
Question: I can see how to shift to 1st gear on the assy, but what do I do about the Parking Rod??? There must be a lever inside the well???

Thoughts....

What you want to do is disconnect the driveshaft or put the rear end of the vehicle on jack stands, chock the front wheels and then shift the transmission into neutral and while turning the output shaft of the transmission or the driveshaft push the parking rod up and down until you hear it engauge. PRND21 so with the lever all the way to the left it's in park just pop it two clicks to the right for neutral. Also sometimes it's difficult to shift it out of park and that is common with these transmissions because there is a binding between the rooster comb and the detent ball. But if it's a new valve body most likely something like that was corrected.

This was great, You helped me understand how to switch the Tranny into Neutral, but I still could NOT hit the switch with the parking rod attach to the Valve Body. I finally disconnected the Parking Rod, then attached the assy to the rod after I inserted it to the well (Not that easy). Either way, I am running again and the Tranny works great &I saved 2K+!
Thanks for the help, No doubt you got me through this one

I don't know if that is an insult or a compliment but I'm going to take it as a compliment. Eitherway, I build transmissions on a regular basis so for someone like me I can jump under there and have it done in seconds. But for someone who hasn't done it before or often it takes a few times before things go smoothly, to someone who has never done it before me explaining to them what to do is like a doctor telling you how to do open heart surgery over the phone. I can only say push the rod until it engages and make sure the transmission is in neutral. It has to be in neutral else wise you won't be able to get the rod in because of the parking pawl. But anyways good to hear things are working again.

Installing the parking rod is hit or miss no matter what, no easy way to get it engauged it's just push it in and cross fingers. It's easier to install the parking rod then install the valve body and before the valve body is completed bolted to the case push the pin of the parking rod into the rooster comb of the valve body and install the e-clip. It's of course easier when the transmission is removed but it's not like I've never done it upside down before. Matter fact I spend more time under trucks and cars then I do driving them.

It was a compliment. He was standing on the edge of the cliff and you nudged him in the right direction. He's a noob and really didn't put it clearly that you helped.

His only issue I think was that he had to disconnect the linkage from the trans (which probably went unsaid on your part but understood) and was concerned with forcing or breaking something. I can't give you any reps for it since most members don't use them but I can give you an atta boy . (seems I have to give them to more members before I can give 'em to you again they should probably just do away with the whole system and award a million to anyone that has a new/modded truck)

Ah thanks for clearing that up for me, I spend too much time in the garage I guess lol

Yea I haven't given any rep points either lately, been very busy with school and stuff and haven't had alot of time to come on the forum as often as I use too. But I'm working on a project and soon enough I will be all over this forum.

Oh, it's good to hear from you Warlock, how have you been?
