Default ram 2500 sputtered and died. weird smell and cat glowing. blocked cat?

like the title said i was driving and all of a sudden my truck sputtered and died. i opened the hood to get a wiff of something bad and the cat was glowing red. is it simply a blocked cat? i waited 5 min and drove it home.

Sounds like a cat that is pretty close to blocked or melted down inside.

It could also be a bad injector on the TBI, pouring out too much fuel or a plug that isn't firing, sending raw fuel into the exhaust.

Yeah the Cat sounds bad. When it's glowing red like that it's clogged and swells up the palladium inside and there's no exhaust flow.

You can whack it a couple times with a hammer and it'll break apart and make a lot of rattling noise...but get you home.

If you cut off the factory cat it's worth about 100-125 scrap price and usually about the cost of a new cat

So it's not as big a financial hit as you'd expect.

Sounds like it to me. I had a clogged cat on my '98 5.9L. Mine was loosing oil and smoking every so often. Turns out the plenum gasket went and it was sucking oil. That was one of several issues that pushed me into a newer truck.
