I have owned every generation of these rams and have done tuneing to everyone of these trucks. With that being said my current gen 4 truck will out perform all other previous gens (except srt). Most of the people that buy pickups are happy with the basic mods (exhaust, cai, appearance mods). Then there are the minority that like to take it a step further(blower, nitrous) but honestly these are not meant to be go fast vehicles. They are HEAVY full size trucks. I personally am pleased with my performance of my stock ram. I lowered my truck for a better look and installed a bakflip1 cvr. Maybe I might do exhaust someday and a drop in air filter when my stock one gets ready for replacement. As far as a tuner for it not interested. With gas being 4.00 a gallon for the cheap stuff I dont want to install a tuner that will require me to run higher octane gas.

Chrysler/Dodge put that 5year/100K warranty right about the same time they installed the military encryption. Makes sense doesn't it? For us NORMAL usage MOPAR pickup owners that daily drive, weekend recreational tow, and load building supplies on our rigs, the horsepower is a plenty and then some. That's the difference in some owners getting 100,000 to some owners barely getting 10000 before a tranny rebuild. I understand your point BUT, not all of us want to drag race a 6000lb truck on the streets anymore; as much as I have with my 97 Dakota and 99 Ram with the 5.9L magnums. Things can close up pretty quick on the streets. Which leaves me with one more point; you ever watch the guy on youtube doing a burnout with an SRT10 Ram? Lost control, rolled it over into a tree. That's the reason I believe, behind Chrysler's control.
the 5year/100K warranty was actually a down grade that started in '10 and the computers were still unlocked then. My '09 came with a lifetime powertrain and an unlocked computer. I could care less about the warranty...hence the mods. If I were buying a truck today I'm sorry to say it wouldn't be a Ram because of the tuning issue.

Weird how Ram is tightening the belt while the other 2 are still allowing the customer to do as they choose. Ford and Chevy have rediculous aftermarket support by the factory and private industry. Personnally, I'm going to enjoy this while I can. the CAFE standards are 54.5 mpg avg (across a manufacturers lineup) by 2025. I know CAFE mpg and real world mpg aren't the same but nice big V8s are only going to be harder to come by.

Forgive my ignorance but can you use a 2009-11 ecu in the 2012? There might be some wiring involved.

I think you would need to go with a Computer from a '09 or '10
the 2010 is slightly better

I got rid of my 10 1500 for an 11 Power Wagon. The 11 has a lot less nanny control. I can tell you honestly to roll into the throttle slowly or you will leave 2 black streaks until it hits third.

push a button on mine and I can smoke the tires all day long, done it once and that was it, I don't see the big deal turn the hill assist off and see if it makes a difference also its there to keep you from having issues pulling a trailer off a boat ramp and stuff like that so it may cause that also personally I think the launch control is pretty good in my '12 ram laramie

hodgeee I'm pretty sure you'd be able to swap even to a 2010 Ram if you did the dealin'. That way you could modify to your hearts content. The thing Chrysler should have did with the Ram was offer two versions of the 11's and 12's in the sense that one is military encrypted with a warranty and the other is unlocked with no warranty. Kind of like race dirtbikes to trail bikes. A CRF250R carries no warranty from Honda because it was built for the racers as opposed to the CRF250X which was built for the recreational rider. I would definitely have disregarded the warranty over an all out modifiable 2011-2012 Hemi Ram.

Throwing the conversation back a few posts.....There are numerous dyno vids of stock Rams, usually to serve as baselines for mods. There is a vid of a stock 2011 hemi truck on youtube making 306hp/331tq to the wheels. Doing the math that comes up to about 18-22% driveline loss which I would say is pretty typical for these trucks. In short, I think the power is there. Dodge knows that enthusiasts are going to be modding and dynoing these trucks, tuneable or not, and they aren't going to lie about something that is so easy to confirm or deny.

Back to the current topic....I don't think Dodge (Ram, Chrysler, whatever) is trying to protect anyone by "dumbing down" or limiting their vehicles. If this is the case, why would they sell any type of high-performance vehicle? Why would their SRT division even exist?? I think the motivation for the locked tunes on the newer vehicles is more likely for longevity and reliability purposes. Yes, it may be the consumer's choice to mod and drive their vehicle however they see fit but how many of those same consumers would try to turn to warranty coverage after they #&^$ something up? Another possibility is that they simply wanted to start reaping the profits from the tuner companies themselves and have made the vehicles so that a tuner would have to come from them. I don't buy that one though because it would be on the market, or at least be hyped about, by now.

I think they should not lock the tunes but instead install a program that can sense when the tune has been altered or replaced even if it has been returned to stock afterward. I know there has been a lot of debate about whether or not they can see previous tuning on current vehicles but if they have the technical capability to lock the tunes on newer vehicles so effectively then they can certainly create a program to permanently monitor and log a vehicle's tuning. Then it should be common knowledge....you mess with the stock tune, you forfeit your warranty. That puts the choice in the consumer's hands.

the dyno numbers are still up there where they "should" be b/c that is peak hp & tq. The Ram tq mgt does it's thing below 3000 rpm.
