Default Front wheels wont engage

I have a 99 Ram Sport 1/2ton. The other day i went to go play in the mud and when i got onto the trail i shifted into 4h and the light on the dash did not come on and i found that my front wheels were not engaging. I wanted to make sure it wasnt the transfer case so i shifted into 4L and the low works but the front wheels still wont engage and the light still wont come on in the dash. Any ideas?

I found what looks to be a metal vacuum line that runs from the actuator on the back of the front axel to the transfer case that is broke. Could that be the culprit?

That IS the culprit.

Had the same thing happen on my 97 ctd 4x4 dually. 4wd stopped working on my way out of a particularly nasty trail on the hunting property. I managed to claw my way out by putting it in 3rd gear and just letting the dual rear wheels eat.

When I got back on solid ground, I looked and the vacuum line had come off at the tcase. Put it back on, and voila, 4wd worked again.

I fixed the broken line and tried it again. Still nothing. Found that i have no vacuum coming from the T-case. Ive looked all over for leaks and more broken lines and cant find anything. Bad switch in the T-case?

I would suggest taking a look at a vacuum line behind your passenger wheel near the coil. My 4wd wasn't engaging one day and I noticed the line had broke.

Either a bad switch in the tcase, or a leak in the vac line to the tcase.
