What is the name of the part that the upper and lower ball joints press into? The wheel hub also bolts to it. I was looking closely at where the lower ball joint bolts through and it looks like it has a crack in it. It could just be a line that looks like a crack.

I am unsure of what it is called. I know what you are talking about and I will search for the parts name though

It is #1 I think you are talking about. It is called a knuckle and they are about $220 from www.moparpart.com (note this is for my 2003, but will be called the same name)

What a bitch.......I finally got one side done. The problem that I was having was trying to save the outer tie rod. Heat and pickel fork worked wonders on getting the tie rod to pop. I will say that it takes some muscle and extention bars to press the lower ball joint out. I did use a chissel to remove the 4 tabs on the top of the ball joint.I used PB blaster and heat (not at the same time) I purchased a cheap ball joint press from harbor freight (dont recommend it). After pressing out the ball joint, the tool was bent so bad that I couldnt use it to press the new ball joint in. I had to go to autozone and get a rental to press new joint in. I did not do the top ones. I returned them and got new tie rod ends (same price). Now that on side is done, I have a delema. Do I use the tool from autozone to remove the other ball joint and take a chance on ruining their tool? Through my research, I have found out that a cheap ball joint press is cast steel and the quality one is forged steel. I dont know which one I got from AZ.

I would say the rental one is the best one to use. I used a rental one on mine and didn't have any troubles... Didn't you have to break the upper ball joint lose to replace the lower? i have a different set up so I am unsure

It has a lifetime warentee so if i bend it, i guess AZ can get a new one. I would just hate to have to go back and get another one so I could press in the new one. Breaking the upper was fairly easy to do without damaging it. I used a pry bar so as to not damage the boot. I think the lower stuff is harder since thats where all the pressure is. I will try it tomorrow.

if I were you I would rent the front end kit I was talking about. I think it was like 160 from advance auto but it is same as the press where you get the money back. It makes it very easy to remove the joints and very easy on the uppers to not rip the boot.

I just called and reserved it. They had 2 sizes....one was 100 and the other was 150. Im sure I need the bigger one. Do you ever get the feeling that the people that work in these stores dont have a clue?

Some of them I don't think do know anything. I am lucky and my neighbor manages the advance auto by my house and I know he knows his shit. So I just go when he is there and if he isn't the other manager knows his stuff also.

Here is the kit they gave me http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...*front+end+kit And I found that the one on the left in the middle (pic is in my other post) works the best

Ok, now I have that set as well as another press set. So, with the separator and 2 presses I should be good to go. The guy at advance said that if i bend it, no problem, they can get a new one.
