Post Towing with a V6 Ram

I own a 1989 Short bed Dodge Ram D100 2WD with a 3.9L V6 that has approx 140,000 miles on it. I'm considering trailer pulling options for this truck using a standard step bumper with a ball or a class 2 or 3 hitch. What would be the maximum safe load I could pull with this truck considering the lower powered V6 and not ruin the truck or create a hazardous situation for myself and others? Any input or advice is welcome.

Howdy, with the step bumper you should be limited to tow 2000lbs and a tounge of aprox 250lbs safely, DO NOT GO OVER! If what you're carrying does weigh 2000lbs or more make sure you use trailer brakes, especially since you have a truck with drums on the rear. The V6 should have plenty of torque to tow a great deal of weight, you might not be able to go up a certain hill at high speed you would have to downshift but you can certainly move a bit of work. I tow a 32' travel trailer with a 5.2L Magnum and it does fine.
