Cummins came out with a 4.2 v6 and a 5.6 v8 a long time ago....Dodge turned it down at first, so Cummins thought about putting out their own line of trucks with them....but it's good to see Dodge is actually thinking about it now.

I was somewhat interested in the pentastar v6 at first but am no longer impressed. I read that it makes peak power and torque above 6,000rpm. So that 305hp rating is pretty useless in real world driving. It just looks good on paper.

I think it's kind of funny how people say things like "the v6 has the same power as the 4.7L (305hp vs 310hp) and better mpg, so why have the 4.7L?". They overlook the fact that the 4.7L makes nearly 100 lbft more torque, and it makes it's peak power at mid rpms instead of high rpms(so it's actually usable power). And if you put the 8 speed behind the 4.7L and hemi then they will also get 17 city/25 hwy. Hell my 4.7L with the 6 speed gets very close to 17 city now and at least 20 hwy. Have gotten up as high as like 23 hwy before.

V6's will not run as long either due to poorer balancing.
Then the v6 costs more too.....

I'm not impressed with it.

I also read a review of the new ram and overall they liked it but they said they put like 2,500lbs behind the v6/8 speed and it was terrible.

Wherever you read peak torque at 6000rpm, never listen to ANYTHING they say.
Peaks are at 4800, redline is at 6200. Pentastar 3.6 makes 90% of its torque or more from 1600 to 6000rpm.
They are as fast in the cars as last gens hemi's

What makes you think a 60 deg v6 has balancing issues?

v6 in general are not as well balanced as v8's, just the nature of them.

You are right, I must have misread or misunderstood, peak torque is at 4800ish rpm like you said. The torque band seems to be decent. Still though peak hp over 6,000 rpm.

I'd have to see proof that they are as fast as the last hemi. 260ish lb ft v6 as fast as a 375ish lb ft v8? I know it has a significantly better trans and gearing, but I don't believe that.

I believe once they turbo it it will be good, but right now it's just not impressive to me.

Put the 8 speed behind the hemi and 4.7 and you'd get nearly the same mpg with tons more power and torque. Can't wait to see how the hemi does with the 8 speed, mpg should be pretty good. Torque and hp will be higher to the wheels as well since the new trans is better(less loss to the wheels).

That review said it struggled with something like 2,500 lbs behind it. I want a truck that can pull 2,500 lbs easily.

Read the speed figures on all par iirc.
I agree, in a truck if any towing or heavy it's not the engine to have.
I really think they are fixing to make a competitor for the Eco boost if it continues success.
I have a hemi now, I love it. I got 33" duratrac's and 2.5" lift and the truck still banged of 20+mpg on my last 3 trips (last 3 weekends)
So I don't see that as an issue.
I think they'll be fine for certain buyers. Honestly though I had no beef with the outgoing 3.7l. I had one in a Dakota I found it exceeded my expectations.

As for the v6 balance thing:
6x60 deg =360 deg. No issue
Lots of v6's with 200k + miles on them.

The v6's on 90deg config with split pin cranks have had varying degrees of success

What's long overdue is some love for the 4.7, and a bigger v8 in the 2500 and up trucks.

I love my 4.7, wish they would have put it in some smaller, lighter vehicles though. Having it compete with the hemi makes most people think it sucks.

I heard they are discontinuing the 4.7, any truth to that? If they turbo the v6 then it's understandable, but I'd take the 4.7L over the current v6 any day. Especially for less money.

A 60 degree V is perfect for a V6. The best 90 degree V6's have balance shafts in the vee and off set crank pins. Still would rather have a 4.7L V8 in a 4500+lb truck though. I will drive one (3.6 Pentstar) as soon as they get some at the local dealer, just to satisfy my curiosity.

The first 1/2 ton truck to come out from the big 3 with a diesel will be getting my money. That's all I have to say about that. SO HURRY UP DODGE!

i agree that they do need to give some love to the 4.7. i have driven the new 4.7 and while its definitely better than my 4.7 (07) it still feels like they could get more power out of it (as well as make some new aftermarket parts.

i would love to see how the 3.0 diesel does as well as the 3.6 pentastar
