Default Conversion to carb and distributor?

My buddy wants to run a 5.9 in his dirt race car. The rules mandate a carb and distributor... no EFI. Can a stock distributor be replaced with a "real" distributor to fire the plugs?

I know a few guys who have adapted a Holley 4412 to an EFI intake so that's not a problem...

Calling someplace like Jegs would be the only thing I'd know to say to that question, buy your gaskets, at least, from them and they'd probably be more'n happy to help.

For the carb, can you use any OEM intake? The earlier 360 4V intake is abundant and dirt cheap, and a direct swap. The distributor is a direct physical swap. Setting it up depends on what you're allowed. Mopar Performance has a guide for installing their package.
This adapter might simplify things on the carb:

He might even be willing to punch one out specifically for the Holley you mentioned.
The MP ignition instructions are here:

Or you can run a DUI type distributor (http://www.performancedistributors.com/dodgesbdui.htm), again, depends on rules. It's a single wire hook up, ready-to-run. The Mopar kit requires basically splicing 4 or 5 wires to bypass the TBI setup. The kit can be had from Summit or Jegs or pretty much any outlet that sells MP stuff. Looks like this:

You could cobble together what you need from the local junkyard and put your own together, or get an old point-type distributor and run that with a coil (simple and cheap, two wires to hook up), or do the Pertronix upgrade to a points distributor and have the simplicity of the distributor with electronics instead of points.

If you wanna keep your battery charged, you need to set up an external regulator:
