Default First Job

As you may know from another thread, I'm going to have to work to get the money needed for my 1st car, which I'm hoping is a 2nd Generation Ram 1500 that I'm going to probably modify to make look like Walker's truck in the T.V. series "Walker, Texas Ranger" (which I'm an avid fan of that show, thanks to my grandpa, who is also a fan.)

Anyhow, I've always been good at building websites. So I'm working on a website design company (called Garrett's Websites) that is set to open next month. But I don't know if I should stick with web design or go to an actual job.

The biggest concern is trying to stick web designing into my busy schedule. The other concern is learning and applying my CSS skills. The other concern is that if my customer asks for something done that I don't know how to do, I'll have to learn how to do it. But that isn't stopping me thanks to someone I know who used to do web design for living and one of the slogans I've came up for my business is: "If I don't know how to do it, I'll learn how to do it -- for FREE!"

So, cast your vote! If you think I should get an actual job, post a reply with a idea of what I could do.

Thanks,
Garrett

I can't vote because both are real jobs. Being self employed is tough there isn't always a paycheck coming in when you start up. Your field you have chosen is one where there are a lot of people who have gone to College and University to do this as a profession and that will also create a strong competition you will be going against. I think if you can get a job that will supply you with a paycheck consistently you will be better off and that will give you time to research and learn the things you might not know how to do in web design at this time.

The "if I don't know how to do it, I'll learn how to do it -- for FREE!" is a big statement as I am sure there are a lot of things in web design you haven't come across yet or might not have the connections to get what are the new things that are being used.

Best of luck with your decision and I admire your drive and focus on getting your truck!

Was about to go to bed when I caught your message.

You've got a point. However, there really is no competition in this town. The last web design here in my town was a computer repair shop. I don't know, but I'm going to give it a spin from now and June. June 2013 is when I will make the final decision.

Yes if you have basically a year why not give it a go and then after the school year if it isn't going as you had hoped you can then look for another job!!

Meanwhile, I'm going to be looking for a job. Just in case things don't go as planned...

IDK how the web design business will go here. There's a lot of businesses that would be better off with one, but can't pay to have one built or can't find a designer.

Find a business you would like to work with and do one up for them so you can show them what type of product you are able to provide for them!! Good Luck

Last night was a short night. Barely got any sleep (only about 10 minutes or so) because I was worrying about stuff (none of which had anything to do with a job.) I have school today and since I only got 10 minutes of sleep, I'm going to be extra-tired today. Let's not forget that I stared at the wall thinking for about 50% of the time.

Anyways, way ahead of you on that. I'm into Climate Control (Heating and Cooling) and is working on a website for an "imaginary" Comfortmaker dealer, even though I've started drawing concepts for a local HVAC company that sells Comfortmaker's brandmate, Heil.

(Sorry if that's all way over your head. Comfortmaker and Heil are made by the same company.)

I agree with both of these sentiments and I also agree both are real jobs. However, my thought is, having a job while you're in school where you're making a paycheck is a good start. In the meantime, as time permits in your schedule, you can keep doing what you're doing, coming up with some designs you can present to potential customers and tweak your web skills on the side. Good luck with your decision though and kudos to you for having the ambition to set and reach goals, definitely keep us posted and sure hope you get more sleep tonight lol!

Have to agree with Shawn about being self employed, my father is self employed and is constantly chasing people for payments, most of his customers are from out of town so it makes it harder to get a hold of people, after working for him for a few years I would never work for myself, ya sure you're your own boss but technically you arent, you are employed by your customers making them your boss.... I also agree that what you chose is a real job, I would change the slogan though, you dont want to make your customers think that there is something that you dont know how to do, if it comes to the point that you dont know how to do what they want you too then deal with it but dont have them thinking that you may not be able to do it before they even contact you. And lastly, if you like doing that than you may as well stick with it, if you are already fairly competent in doing it than you are a head of the game because you havent had to pay to go to college to get competent

everyone is right being self employed is a real job. I am self employed and you have good days and bad days. The good thing is you will work harder when it is all up to you to pay bills and ect. I quit a good job to work for myself it was a big step and now I do not think i could work for anyone
