Default When to do first oil change?

I am sure this has been asked many times, but I will ask again anyways. I bought my 2012 BigHorn about a month ago, and am at about 1500 miles right now. When has everyone been doing first oil change. Book says 8000, I stopped at dealer I got it from and they said even though it says 8, to do it at 3, even the first change. Any help would be appreciated!
I was also thinking of switching to synthetic at some point, when would you do it? The last truck I had was a 98(5.2l), I had it for about 10 years and only put 60000 miles on so obviously Im not one of the guys that spends all day in it, have company truck for that. Like I said, any advise would be great!!

I did mine at 1500, changed it to full synthetic, will do the next one at 8000. If you use the search button at the top of the site you can search for existing threads about oil changes, this has been covered many times.

you can change to syn anytime. i went 1500 and changed to syn on my 11. i am thinking that was overkill. if i had read up on this, i would wait till about 4000 miles, change to syn and do 7500 mile oci.

Some dealerships will suggest every 3000 miles because they want you to come to them (and pay them) to change the oil. More you are there, more money they get. Oil technology has improved greatly over the years, and changing every 3000 is a thing of the past (unless you work your truck hard or in dirty conditions). Follow the manual and yo will be fine.

Follow the book. Keep a record and all will be good. Or you can do that the rest of the nuts and change it early like at 1500 miles to synthetic then every 8K. Oh, I'm one of those nuts.

If you really want to know what's going on get a sample of your oil and send it to a lab. About $22 will tell you everything you need to know.

I did mine at just over 500 miles. I know it's way under what the book says but I've changed the oil in every new vehicle I bought at 500 miles and never had an issue with one of them. I'm still deciding if I'm going to switch to synthetic or not.

I found myself at the same point about 2 months or so ago.

They said they printed the owners manual for Ram's that come from the factory with synthetic oil already in the motor.

When my truck reached 3,600 miles the DIC started chiming for the oil to be changed. I switched to synthetic so I don't have to change it as often.

My suggestion would be change to synthetic oil and check it after 4,000 miles.

I did my first oil change at 5,000 kms and went with full synthetic Amsoil. The Onboard EVIC reminder is way to soon, I just reset it and change it on my own schedule at 8,000 km intervals.
