Default Faulty coolant sensor?

OK so the other day I turned my heater on and it wasn't getting hot. The check gauges light came on and my temp gauge was red lined. So I went under the hood and noticed my coolant was really low. So I filled it up with water and all seemed normal and my heat was working. Well the next day I started my truck up and the check gauges light came on and my temp gauge was red lined again. I popped the hood and my coolant level was still at full and my fan was running. I shut off my truck and started it again and the light went away and my temp gauge went back to normal.

So my question is what could be causing this? I was thinking it could possibly be a faulty temp sensor but I don't want to go replacing things without narrowing down the possibilities first. Any ideas?

I have the same problem & installed a new sensor - does the same thing. Start the truck in the morning & after abot 30 seconds it redlines - shut the truck off & it reads fine for the rest of the day. I am interested in ideas to fix this problem.

Well I talked to a buddy of mine and it seems that there is some kind of blockage in the heater core and all that needs to be done is flush it out with a hose.

Edit: I think my buddy is right because my truck hasn't done it lately....so maybe the clog got broken up?

I went all last winter without heat - had the heater flushed & now have heat but temp guage is acting up. Had the sensor changed but still goes to hot & get the check guages light. Shut the engine off & restart - all reads fine.

UPDATE: Well I stopped getting the CEL but i did notice why i was losing coolant. The seal for my thermostat was bad so I just replaced the thermostat and no leaking! My heater doesn't seem to be heating as hot as it did but I still have some tinkering to do. I might flush my coolant system and heater core.
