Hey guys -

New to the forums...just trolling and reading for now. I have a 2010 Ram Sport 4x4 with a rear end still intact (keeps fingers crossed). I bought it used with 22k on it and just drive it on the weekends and around town, I have a VW Rabbit I commute and run around in.

So far windows have been tinted, swapped out headlamps and tail lights, remote start with viper security, all new focal sound system with the 10" sub stealth box (and amp), 2" leveling kit, 35" tails, 20" KMC Slides (black glossy) and a borla cat back with K&N intake on the way. I'll put some pics up soon.

Next thing I was gonna do is gears or brakes. I can really only afford to do one of them but might do both. Brakes are obviously really important but all I'm reading about the rear ends exploding over this pinion nut, honestly, scares the hell out of me. So, I'm leaning towards ripping the whole front and rear diff and jumping from the weaksauce 3.55s (ok, ok, they're fine for grocery getting and what not, but that's not my intention with this truck) and upgrading to 4.56's. I had a quote for trutracks front and rear with 4.56's but they keep telling me that there's a bunch of gear whine with aftermarket gears and the 3.92 OEMs are back ordered for a couple months. Going to research this some more.

Either way, that should eliminate hopping to a stop doing 75mph. Frightening.

I used to have a 99 and 03 SLT. This is my third Ram and 8th Dodge overall. Bit of brand loyalty. Looks forward to learning about these newer Rams and chatting with you guys.

Welcome! Enjoy the new Ram!

There are a ton of brilliant people and technicians here (myself included, technician anyway) and we will help in any way we can. I am a soldier and mechanic and a few other members are mechanics by trade. Everyone has something to offer at the Z. Feel free to send me a message with any questions you may have. Any info you need, if we don’t know it, someone can find it for you.

Since you drive a 2009+(4th gen) RAM, be sure to take a look at Total Load Control™ Air Suspensions - especially if you haul/tow alot of gear or toys.

I hope you don't mind if I tell you how I learned about TLC and why I'm their Z rep.

For the past 8 years, I have been stationed in every environment imaginable, from the snow and colds of Northern NY, to the constant drizzle of rain in Seattle, to the front lines of the wars in Iraq (twice) and Afghanistan (once), all as a Heavy Equipment/Route Clearance Mechanic. Currently I'm stationed at Ft. Lewis near Seattle and still turning wrenches for Uncle Sam.

I first read about TLC™ soon after they became a sponsor on the Z. When I saw the design with 9" air springs, I knew the system was more powerful than any on the market. I recognized the patented design was the best solution for hauling or towing heavy loads with the RAM coil springs (we use air bags similar to TLC's on large rigs in the Army).

Anyway, I got back a couple months ago and was even more impressed when I finally got to drive my 09 with TLC. Not only did it level my truck with heavy loads (and only 20-30 psi), but TLC made my truck handle more like a sports car and accelerate with ease. I couldn't believe that TLC by itself lowered my unladen 0-60 time by 1 second (because it shifts the weight forward so there's no hesitation).

The steering and handling is tighter and my mileage MPG increased a bit (again because easier off the line; about 1 MPG better).

In the meantime, I sold the '09 and got a like-new 2011 and easily removed and reinstalled TLC. I just got back from a month-long cross-country trip, towing 7,000lbs of boat for much of it, with a smile on my face.

I have TLC's air kit with a Viair compressor and its easy to air up the bags in a few seconds when I want to. You can also use wireless or manual air.

If you’re wondering, TLC doesn’t interfere with the RAM smooth factory ride. Coils are great for ride but not heavy loads. TLC is the suspension upgrade that adds the strength to keep the truck level with every load and improves the truck’s steering, handling, braking, ride, acceleration & mpg!

I wouldn't drive my truck without TLC. Its really the suspension that should come from RAM.

That's why I'm proud to be TLC's rep.

TLC is affordably priced and shipping is FREE for RAM 1500 in the USA and only $50 to Canada!

Feel free to send me an email at ArmyofOne2006@remove_this_part.gmail.com so we can discuss things further.

Looking forward to pics of your rig and seeing you active in the community.

-Josh

Welcome to the forum Shawn,
This forum is full of great looking trucks; packed with great mod ideas and there are loads of knowledgeable and experienced people here.

I wouldn't worry too much about the rear diff issues. There are a lot more that do NOT have an issue then those that do. If you are real concerned, check the nut. It is torqued at 210ft/lbs (minimum), so you can tighten it as much as you can with a regular 1/2" drive ratchet with no fear of over-tightening it.

As for gear noise with aftermarket gears; if you buy gears from any of the reputable gear makers and they whine, the issue is with the technician. Unless you are buying the cheapest junk labeled 'Made in China', there is no reason for the gears to make any abnormal amount of noise. If you switch from 3.55 to 4.56 it is turning faster so there will be a 'slight' difference in sound just because it's turning faster. The 4.56 gears at 30mph will sound similar to the 3.55 gears 40 mph. Any more and it's time to find a differential technician that knows what he's doing.

AND - We all like pix! Got any to share?

Enjoy the Z!
