Default Empty gas tank wont fill up??

Hey guys. Had a strange problem happen today with my 08 1500 Hemi. I wasn't paying attention to the gas guage and the light came on. Drove it to work and stopped off after work to get gas and it would only fill up for about 3 dollars worth until the pump stopped. Looked in the filler and it took a sec for the gas to go all the way into the tank. Tried pumping it a little slower and it still did it. Took forever to get half a tank full and just decided to give up. Tried a different gas station and it happened again. Why would it not allow me to put gas in the tank without overflowing? This has never happened before and I rarely let the gas light come on. Does it have something to do with letting the tank get empty like that? Is it safe to drive it like this? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a blocked vent on the tank, I had the same issue with one of my service trucks, although a ford, same problem, in my case it was a blocked vent line

It happened to me many moons ago with my second beater.

I'm gonna stick out my neck and say you either have a plugged vent line [Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery Valve] or some type of blockage in the filler and/or neck tube.

It's very common on older [Ford] vehicles but your 2008 model is anything BUT older.

Anything I can do myself or do I have to take a trip to the dealership?

My vent line issue was a tow to the shop and a dissmantle of the tank to access the plugged line.... I ran out of fuel on the highway and road service could not get fuel into it.

I'm thinking it's a definitive dealership/shop issue.

Good luck brother.

Dealership will charge you to look at it & then may or may not apply that amount to the repair

Take it a regular Automotive Service Excellence (Certified ASE) garage & get their opinion, then make your decision

I always go to an ASE Certified shop that the Hot Rodders, Classic vehicle owners, etc. use

One more question guys. Am I crazy or is there supposed to be a little flap that you push in with the pump nozzle to put the gas in the tank? When I take off my gas cap there is no flap.....just a hole where you can see down into. There is also no hissing when I remove the gas cap.

I too, on my 2012 model, have no flapper.

No, you're not crazy.

Ok cool thanks. Funny how you never notice things like that until something happens.
