Default Melted Fuel Pump?

2001 Ram SLT 5.9l V8. I was pumping gas and kept having a huge spit back cutting off the gas pump. Thought maybe not venting fuel tank during fill up. Checked tank neck/filler hoses and noticed venting hose not connected to anything. Crawled under truck with flash light and this is what I found. Looks like the top is melted. Right where the venting hose would hook up. Thoughts on how? Thanks.

WOW !!!
Is there a heat shield somewhere around there ?
That looks like something the exhaust system would cause

I think the fuel pump is down inside the tank, so I'm not sure what we're looking at there.

Not really near the exhaust. Area where melted is where the venting hose plugs in. The fuel pump is inside the tank, but it is canister shaped and inserts on the top side of the tank.

Thinking you might have gotten gas with a little more than 10% ethanol.

After watching the video I'd say you have a fried pump. Maybe it shorted out. It looks like it melted near where the electrical plug is.

Oddly it still seems to be working fine. I have no real idea when it happened. I do have a parasitic amp draw killing my battery. I am wondering if this is the cause.

Maybe there is a short in the wire, possibly worn cover shorting to metal somewhere around that area. Could explain your battery thing too.

I would get that thing replaced asap... you may have a fire waiting to happen.
