Default cannot bleed air out of power steering system

I just installed a new power steering pump and both the pressure and return lines. Out of the two different methods I've seen to bleed the system of air and flush the system I used this method. I connected both lines to the steering gear then filled the reservoir with new fluid and pumped out the old fluid from the reservoir not letting it run dry and repeated this until I got the old fluid out. Now this is a very simple procedure but when I look down into the reservoir it's milky white because of all the air bubbles. Why?

Just wondering if you're using power steering fluid or ATF.

ATF has a tendency to bubble up. Consider taking a bottle of dish detergent and shaking it.

If you're using ATF you may be getting the same effect.

I'm using power steering fluid. The truck is a 1997 and this is the first time the power steering system has been touched in anyway. Also when I looked carefully at the fluid I pumped out it looked like it had black bits in it. I did a road test and the steering doesn't seem to be as responsive as before...it has a tighter feel. Time perhaps for a new steering gear. Lastly when I start the engine there is a slight whine coming from the pump. I'm just going to see what happens over time; everything else appears to be ok. Thanks for the reply and nice looking machine you got.

I usually have the front in the air and without engine running fill power steering and turn wheels from lock to lock a few times. Then start engine and do the same topping up as required. That seems to work the best for me.

Just like Howells said. One better is to get a helper to do the wheel turning.

Then you just sit there keeping the reservoir topped off as needed as well as watching the fluid condition. Takes roughly 40x or so.

If you have debris coming out, then that usually indicates the seals being done. You can pick up a seal kit from Napa for like $15 or something.
