Question Gears?

Can someone breakdown gears for me? I know 4:11 are drag gears with not much top end but tons of low end. What is the are some of the best gears to put in with out killing my top end and mpg. Also what comes stock in the 08 2wd hemi?
Thanks for the help

in 08 you could have gotten 3.55s or 3.92s
not 100% sure those were the only 2 selections. I have the 3.92s in my 07 and on a trip to gatlinburg this passed summer I got 18.5 mpg running between 75 and 80 I love the 392 its a good mix of good get up and go and cruising....but i would like to get a set of 4.56s to wake her up a bit.....

Jpd, depending on the tire size(diameter) you plan on running; if you stayed with the OE 33" on stock 20's, the optimum gearing for all around performance with this tire diameter, according to gearing ratio charts for manual trannys would be to run between a 4.27 or 4.56. With all this GO GREEN crap and EPA requirements for higher fuel economy numbers, it takes away from putting more performance on the streets. After doing research through many gearing and tire calculators, the concensus says that if running a 3.55 rear gear, to get to that all around performance area would require running a 255/50-17 or 27" diameter tire with speeds at around 65mph with a 1:1 ratio, rpms should be somewhere around 2800-2900rpm. To get the best all around performance in a 3.92, according to the chart is best achieved using 29-30" tires, rpms should be around 28-2900 at 65mph or 1:1 ratio. Can you imagine how much a tire size nearly 3 inches shorter would do to wake up the Ram? Sure you'd lose fuel economy numbers but the amount of performance gained would make it all worth while if that's more important to you. On a slammed Ram, a wide, low profile tire would look mean as hell but on a lifted Ram, a 30" tire let alone a 27" tire would look tiny as hell. Hope I didn't confuse ya.

That's why our drag slicks/radials are typically in the 26" diameter range, even with a 3.55 you see some great torque.

But back on topic, 4.10s aren't really drag gears, they are better low-end gears to turn the OEM 20s. If you want 'drag-gears' then you'd want to look at 4.56+ and keep OEM diameter. Your truck will have come with 3.55s or 3.92s depending on your wheel diameter and trim level, but ideally, the 3.92s are the better all-round gear if you want some low end without limiting your top end too much.

4.10's are not a drag gear..I'm missing my 4.56's and I will be installing a new set after the next track day...I'm able to still run to 140+ mph with them (and I run 30"-31" tires on the street and 28" dr's/slicks at the track)

I'm also wanting to run 4:10's in my '12 crew cab. I plan on stepping up to a set of 22's and a 295/40/22

I would do 4.56's with that setup...you'll be 1.3" taller than my 29.99" tall tires

Well there you have it Jpd... Both CdnoilRam and Chefred112 are avid draggers and have the time slips, tire size to gear ratio, and recommendations on what gear(namely a 4.56 or bigger) that would serve your needs if going all out draggin.

..I don't even drag as much (maybe 3-4 times a year)... but it's a thrill driving on the streets though..I really miss that..for now..

4:56's are a PITA to get installed in a 2012 aren't they? Also expensive vs the 4:10's that come with the RT's. long term plan is to supercharge it of Ripp or another company releases a kit.

I'm looking for performance and economy.
