Default Homemade "Mini-Server"

I tend to fill up hard drives really quick. I've only had my current computer a year and 4 months and the hard drive is dying from last of disk space. Oops. Most of the files are needed. So, I was wondering if I could build a miniature server using a wood box, computer fan, hard drive. The hard part would be actually building something to transfer the data from a SATA wire to a USB wire without causing problems. Any ideas? Also any ideas on where I can get a cheap hard drive?

Here's some specs for my computer:

Computer: Asus Essentio Series
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Processor: Intel Pentium
RAM: 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 399MHz
Motherboard: AsusTek Computer Inc.
Hard Drive: 977GB Seagate

Why not get a 1Tb or larger USB backup drive and use it archive all your files. Then only keep the ones on your local computer that you are currently working with, or most likely to. Then updates those files on the external drive every day/week/month as required.

These backup drives are very inexpensive so might do what you need with it costing a fortune.

I agree, I bought a 1.5 TB external hard drive(WD) for like $60 on newegg.com. That was a few years ago, probably cheaper now.

i third the external HD option much cheaper and more practical than seting up a server. I run a 3TB external on my laptop, which is now doubling as my house server when I'm home, so I have access to all my movies on either of the 2 TVs in my place, plus I can surf the web.

Now it's almost like I'm going to have to do it. My Hard Drive only has 2.04 GB's left!

Though, I noticed there's another partition on the disk. The other partition, which is named "D" partition, has over 540 GB left! What does this partition do?

My question is - When I get a external hard drive, can I just set it beside my computer. I already picked one from Wal-Mart.com that met all my needs. However, I'm asking "1TB vs. 3TB"

it is your D: drive, for you to put your data on. move what you can over to it, but DON'T move any windows files! just move your movies/pics/etc over.

Oh. So I can move my photos and videos and all that over. Thanks. Thats what I wanted to know.

I know you can't move your Windows files over. I once moved some software from one location to another and it never worked after that....

It looks like the external hard drive isn't necessary now. But I'm still going to try and get one to back my files up. Right now I've never backed a file on my computer as I don't have anything to back up to.

I also don't know if this computer has multiple drives in it or just one. I think just one physical drive with two partitions.

I've never popped the cover off this computer so IDK. I'm not really a fan of popping the cover off computers (as I know what's in there already, besides my computer has a vent hole on the side where you can see inside) unless you need to fix something.

Lets see if this attachment works.

This attachment was the first photo I saved to the "D" partition.
