Default Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie, Opinions?

I'm new here and actually have been shopping around for a new truck. I have been driving a Ranger for the last 5 years, too small, and it's time to trade up. The 2 trucks that I've been considering is the Ford F150 and the Ram 1500. I've never owned a Ram truck before, but the other day I was shown a 2012 Ram 1500 Laramie by the dealer that was nothing short of beautiful. Although I've been a Ford guy for a pretty long time, I find myself falling for the Ram. With the discounts being offered by Dodge right now I can afford to put myself in the Laramie.

Here's the thing, I worry a bit about gas milage for this vehicle. My 4x4 Ranger doesn't post much better than what the ratings are showing for the Ram, but how does the vehicle stack up guys? Anyone want to give me an opinion. I was in to see Ford the other night and they have the 6 cylinder Turbo, but that engine makes me nervous, too new. The Hemi seems to have more of a track record behind it, and with the MDS technology, seems to boast comparible milage to the Ford.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated from any guy or gal driving the Ram. How is the reliability? The JD Power site seems to rank it low, although it appears to base their study on the 2009 model, and it's based upon "Problems per 100 vehicles", but what constitutes a "problem"? A squeaky door latch or a transmission?

Would love to here from anyone on their own experience.

Welcome to the Z! Nice to have you with us!

I love my Ram and she has been very good to me. I've had her for a year and a half now with just about 60,000 km or 36,000 Miles. City I average 14 to 15MPG and highway I average 19 MPG. Towing if I take it easy I get 11.5 MPG if I drop the hammer 9 to 10.5 MPG. Sport Crew Cab with 3.92's. My two buddies with F150's run right about the same numbers but don't quite have the Hemi giggle factor!

Welcome to the forum! You will find a ton of great info, lots of friendly and knowledgeable members and many interesting ideas for mods!

the ecoburst will get better mpg than the hemi when it isnt in the shop with turbo problems... The hemi has a proven track record for a decade now and the ram truck has a proven as well, the 2009's and 2010's did have torque converter and pinion nut issues that were all rectified. YOU WILL BE HAPPY IN A RAM!!

Welcome to the forum,
This forum is full of great looking trucks; packed with great mod ideas and there are loads of knowledgeable and experienced people here.

Once I discovered how JD tabulates and presents it's data I have no longer take it seriously at all. IMO their results are skewed far too much to be of any real world value.

If Truck A sells 10 units and all 10 rate the truck 9 out of 10 and all 10 trucks had to get warranty repair for a wiper blade the JD system would show -
- 100% satisfied customers - 0%
- Units requiring warranty work - 100%

If Truck B also sells 10 units and 5 people rate it at 10 out of 10 and 5 of the trucks needed the trans replace and the customer was with out a truck for 2 months the JD system would show -
- 100% satisfied customers - 50%
- Units requiring warranty work - 50%

Which one interests you the most, the one that was plagued with a wiper blade issue or the one with a 50% chance of total trans failure.
What if you didn't know the details and only had the JD info to make your decision from?

The JD system is not always this screwed up. The problem lies is not knowing when it's right and when it's wrong.

Enjoy the Z!

As long as you don't have a 2 ton right foot, the Hemi can get pretty impressive gas mileage. Also the ride and handling of the 4th Gen Ram's won me over from the Eco-burst.

I just bought my laramie about 6 months ago and was also looking at the F-150. The dodge had a much better ride, plus I loved the Laramie and have been a dodge/ram guy for a LONG time. I have had 6 different Rams and every one of them have been good to me. Highway mileage, I get about 19, maybe 20 on a good day. In town, 13/14 or so. Towing my boat to the Keys on my last trip (8K), I got about 9. LOL But I was hauling a&$ to get down there and fish. LOL Best of luck in your decision.

Default Newbie Here

I just purchased a 2011 Laramie Crew Cab about 3 weeks ago, so I cant really give you a long time owners impression, but I LOVE my truck so far! Everyone who see's it is extremely impressed at the number of luxury features, and the quality of the interior. And who doesn't like exterior?

As for the JD Power stats, I had a 2006 Chrysler 300C (purchased new), and a co-worker had a Lexus (don't know what model), and I lost count of how many times he came to work in a Lexus courtesy vehicle because his was in the shop. Other than scheduled maintenance, I never had a single problem with my car. It had just over 90,000 miles on it at trade-in. JD has their opinion, but that's all it is.

As for gas mileage, it's a truck so....
