Default broken axle in collision, parts or whole axle replace?

2005 Ram 1500, hemi, 2WD, auto trans.

Got into an accident over the weekend, slid into the curb hard enough to break the axle on the passenger side. The axle shaft itself broke, along with the backing plate/caliper mount (at least it appears to be both the plate and mount..I'm not real familiar with these axles, and I haven't yet pulled the other side apart to compare). It looks like the caliper mount is bolted to the flange on the axle a few inches in from the end, rather than on the very end of the axle tube like I'm used to, so maybe I'll have gotten lucky (in a manner of speaking, lol).

I attached a few pictures of the carnage, and wondering if I can replace just the caliper mount and axle shaft, or if there is something else broken off the end of the housing as well, which means I'll likely need to get an entire axle. Part of my concern here (other than the cost), is that the Dodge is the only vehicle I've got capable of transporting an entire axle assembly, but it would be no problem stuffing an axle shaft into the car.

It appears to be more damage than just the internal axle, the axle tube appears damaged. I'd replace the entire assembly.

I would do an extremely thorough inspection of the entire axle assembly! Pull diff cover and inspect gears, really check axle tubes to make sure it's not bent (at all). I would agree with snrusnak, though, looking at the pics it might just be toast. That sucks, man!

Better pics would help but maybe time for a new axle housing and components. also check the springs and mounts for damage to them or the frame where they attach.

This is just one of those wild things to me, especially considering it really didn't feel like I hit the curb all that hard. Didn't even realize I did it at first...just noticed that I wasn't moving forward...thought maybe the trans broke. THen I realized I wasn't sitting all that level anymore, lol. Sadly I do have other experience in smacking curbs from playing around in my younger years, and I've hit them hard enough that I stopped and nearly fell out of the car because my body got rattled so much in the impact, and still didn't see damage like this before. It's almost as if I had an axle shaft that was weak to begin with, and all the planets lined up just right, lol.

Anyways, more pictures -

Obviously the seal is mangled pretty badly, and yes, I do need to crack the diff cover and look at all that stuff closely (perhaps time for a locker upgrade! ), but the axle tube itself looks like it's almost completely unscathed through this except for that bit of a gouge near the 5 o'clock position which looks like a couple taps with a grinder will take care of that.

I was going to work on getting the rest of the shaft out of the housing tomorrow if I get home from work early enough, and check out the rest of the housing.

I would replace the complete rear end I do not think you will ever get a seal to stay in that end.The axle is really weak at the flange then you add a big wheel and tire it acts as a lever. Just hope you do not have a 3.92 ratio those rearends are very hard to find and not cheap

if you lived in southern california, the whole axle assemblies are a dime a dozen at the wrecking yards, made for your Ram
You just have to pick one with the axle ratio that you like

this is what comes up when looking at the internet, just a quick search,

For a '96, sure. For a '05, not so much. Cheapest one I've seen thus far has been $650, though it's a 3.55, and I currently have a 3.92 gear. Although I do have a rear end guy that can swap the gears over fairly inexpensively.

Ironically, I've seen several 2500 and 3500 axles considerably cheaper, in the $400 range. Obviously the bolt pattern is different, going to the 8 lug setup where I have the five lug now, and I'd have to do something up front, plus get different wheels, so it likely wouldn't be any cheaper overall.
