Question Considering buying a 2002, some questions.

Hi guys, I've come here with some questions in search of answers.

I'm looking at buying this truck http://www.stricklandautosales.com/u...ab/121991.html but I have a few concerns that actual owners might be able to address.

The truck is pretty good shape from what I can see, with two minimal rust spots, one on each of the rear fenders, it's clean inside and doesn't appear overly rusty on the underside.

It hasn't been in for a safety check so there is no telling what it may or may not need.

Here are my concerns:

1) the check engine light is on. I can easily scan this and find out the codes.

2) it's VERY high milage, 296,000km. I know trucks are solid, but is this as much of a concern as it would be with a car? I can tell this truck has been used for towing something, I don't think it's had a 5th wheel but it's definitely traveled long distances.

3) the transmission at the very least needs new friction material. After a few mins of driving you can smell the distinctive smell of hot transmission/frictions. When you floor it, it has no oomph. It just accelerates very slowly and gets very loud.

How solid are the transmissions? is there a possibility of severe damage that goes along with that smell, or is there a good chance the transmission would be fine if it had new frictions and an oil change?

Most importantly, what would I be looking at in terms of repair cost IF the transmission needs nothing more than new frictions and fresh oil?? This is by far my biggest concern.

Aside from the serious issue of the transmission the truck is in otherwise decent shape.

I'm considering going back to look at it again, but is there anything I should be looking out for?? for instance, in my mercury cougar I found out too late that those cars have SERIOUS problems with front end suspension.... I would have liked to have known that before I bought one.

sounds like the trans may need more than the truck is worth. which trans is it.

I'm not sure which transmission it has. I'm considering going back today if possible and checking the VIN and scanning the code.

I know it has the 4.7L Engine, but I'm not even sure which of the two models of engine it has.

Is there one transmission that is preferable over another?

What COULD be wrong with the tranny other than just frictions?

Nevermind. The truck sold. But they have a 2003 for $4900 in windsor. No pictures yet but he's getting info for me so it may be a better option.

We'll see.....

Just as an update for no real reason, I'm going to look at another truck today and short of a dead transmission I'm hoping to jump all over this deal.
$5000 for a 2002 4x4 with the 5.9L and quad cab. and there doesn't appear to be a thing externally wrong with it....it's beautiful.

I would like a little advice though on anything I should be looking for specifically that could cause a problem later on down the road.

Unless you specifically want a project truck, you should pass on this one.

I'm not talking about the one in the original post anymore. someone bought it and I wasn't interested in fixing a transmission.

I'm going to look at another one today that appears to be in stellar shape, 250K, and loaded with options.

250k is a LOT of miles. I would definitely take it in for a thorough check out before buying. If it's been maintained it still could be a decent truck, but.....
