Hi guys, I've come here with some questions in search of answers.
I'm looking at buying this truck http://www.stricklandautosales.com/u...ab/121991.html
but I have a few concerns that actual owners might be able to address.
The truck is pretty good shape from what I can see, with two minimal rust spots, one on each of the rear fenders, it's clean inside and doesn't appear overly rusty on the underside.
It hasn't been in for a safety check so there is no telling what it may or may not need.
Here are my concerns:
1) the check engine light is on. I can easily scan this and find out the codes.
2) it's VERY high milage, 296,000km. I know trucks are solid, but is this as much of a concern as it would be with a car? I can tell this truck has been used for towing something, I don't think it's had a 5th wheel but it's definitely traveled long distances.
3) the transmission at the very least needs new friction material. After a few mins of driving you can smell the distinctive smell of hot transmission/frictions. When you floor it, it has no oomph. It just accelerates very slowly and gets very loud.
How solid are the transmissions? is there a possibility of severe damage that goes along with that smell, or is there a good chance the transmission would be fine if it had new frictions and an oil change?
Most importantly, what would I be looking at in terms of repair cost IF the transmission needs nothing more than new frictions and fresh oil?? This is by far my biggest concern.
Aside from the serious issue of the transmission the truck is in otherwise decent shape.
I'm considering going back to look at it again, but is there anything I should be looking out for?? for instance, in my mercury cougar I found out too late that those cars have SERIOUS problems with front end suspension.... I would have liked to have known that before I bought one.
