Default Exhaust newb!

I have stock everything except for the full Volant CAI. Recently got a commuter car (87 acura legend!) so the truck is now the toy!! I want to put an exhaust on it and want the best results for my money while also trying to keep the drone down at highway speeds. Again, I know very little and a single exit might not drone at all? Summit Racing (their brand) has a single exit for $209 and dual for $229. $20 more seems cheap for a whole other pipe.

Anyone have experiance or know about their exhaust systems/kits?

The split dual says I need to perm remove the spare tire, really? I have 17" rims. Not a huge deal either since I carry tire plugs and a compressor... knowing my luck I would have a side wall blow out and be stranded.

Might sound crazy but, I would like the best exhaust performance results to match my CAI while keeping it as queit, so to speak, as I can. Working on a negotiable budget too, which is why I was looking at the summit brand.

Thanks for any replies.

A majority of people are going to tell you to look into magnaflow for performance. I think this is right up your ally because I haven't heard they are expensive, they are great for performance and you can get quiet ones that still leave you with a nice tone. I think its the longer the muffler the quieter the sound (so 24" would be quieter than the 18").

Also, where in VA are you?

I'm not sure but believe summit mufflers are chambered, which is not good for performance. I'd look into a straight through type muffler, like a magnaflow, dynomax, etc. The only restrictive parts of the exhaust are the manifolds(could replace with headers), the y pipe(could replace with aftermarket), and the muffler. The rest is good and actually very good(stainless steel with mandrel bends).

Thanks for the responses. Ill look into the Magnaflow (longer manifold) for sure. Headers and y-pipe and i think Im over shooting my "negotiable" budget for sure!!!
Would love to get the whole exhaust hookup but Im trying to get new tires, a level kit, all new ball joints... also getting my plugs replaced (looks like a pain to get up under the brake booster), fuel injector flush or whatever they do and some other maint. type stuff..... soo the exhaust will have to be a catback only.

Gonefishin776, Im in Warrenton, work in Manassas. Do a lot of fishing myself, Occoquan resevoir is my main go to and some farther south, lake Monticello and lake Anna. where are you?

I'm in stafford, work in Lorton. I have never fished the occoquan, I drive over it everyday on 95 and wondered if the fishin is any good. I've also never fished lake anna. I fish smith lake on base a lot, curtis park, abel lake, and if I feel like shootin fish in a barrel then I fish the local golf course pond. I'd love to meet some local land owners with ponds and get permission to fish them, I love pond hoppin. I have a 9.5" bass hunter ex I just bought. My buddy lives out your way and we fished a farm pond about 10 minutes from Aden grocery and he pulled an 8lber out.

Your driving over the occoquan river, I fish the resevoir which is much better fishing than the river. Love some ponds, not many for me to choose from, I got one really that I have permission and got a 5 lber from earlier this summer. Lake anna is very crowded in the summer, lots of water skiing and tubing. I pull my 14' jon boat almost anywhere, have a 15 hp outboard which is why i like the occoquan so much.... jon boat paradise.

Oh yea the reservoir...I'll have to check that out for sure. I really wanted a jon boat, but I didn't have quite that much money, and didn't want to deal with titles and a trailer and all that. So I just spent $650 on the bass hunter and it is perfect.

It would seem IM a little over my head witht he exhaust situation than I thought. Magnaflows are running well over 500 bucks. I was looking more to the 300 or less tune, and maybe thats not feesable... I have no clue.
Can I JUST buy a magnaflow muffler with different, cheaper pipes? Have no clue, sorry
What really got me thinking about the exhaust was 1. mine looks very rusted and I would likely need one in a couple years time anyway and 2. My truck had a CAI when i baught it, it seems to bog down when accelerating up hills and I feel like its breathing in nice and deep but restricted in the back.

Im laughing at myself cause I feel more lost than when I started this thread, more reading is not always the answer it would seem.

Gonefishin: the occoquan res. is ranked one of VA's best bass fisheries, and some huge cats in there too. i would deff recomend giving it a shot sometime, its some bigger water but holds some decent bass. I always do good throwing black with blue falke soft plastics.

This must be a cat back kit? The cat back kit piping is no better than stock, all you really need is the muffler, unless you'rs is rusted out.

Like I said, manifolds, y pipe, and muffler are the only bad points in the oem exhaust. Don't bother replacing anything else. If you replace some pipe with something from a local exhaust shop 99% chance you will be getting mild steel and crush bends(as opposed to the oem SS and mandrel bends). You can get a muffler for ~$100 and welded on for probably ~$50-$100. You don't have to get magnaflow, they are great, but there are other good ones out there too.

You can probably get a good y pipe and muffler and install for $300.
