Default Backfires going down road

Nothing I have done has worked, actually I've made things worse. Now I get about three quick backfires every so often while cruising down the Hwy. Truck sputters up to speed and is obviously missing at loaded idle (red light). I am going to try to get a code reading but the auto zone reader still reads misfire on 8.

What would be causing all this? New distributer/rotor, plugs, wires.

That problem has blown plenum pan gasket written all over it. Is it consuming excessive oil between changes as well?

Well, it is using about a quart. just started this change but with 218k on the motor I really figured it was getting about time for the oil usage to start. Lord, I don't want to tear back into this thing again, but plenum gasket can't be that difficult, huh?

By my standard, no, but I've been doing this for almost 20 years. It's really a matter of confirming the problem, pulling the intake and replacing the gaskets. If this is the problem, I recommend ordering new intake bolts because the front two are prone to corroding and breaking during removal. The good news is that the remaining stud typically comes out with nothing more than a pair of Vise Grips. This is also an excellent time to replace the cap, rotor and wires (I'm not sure by your first post if you have done it or were looking for validation about replacing them). The only special tool you really need is an inch-pound torque wrench for the plenum pan itself.

So are the bolts for the plenum on the underside of the intake? I can't remember from when I replaced the intake gasket. Yeah, I have all new cap, rotor, plugs, and wires.

Guess I better get it done before cold weather since I don't have my shop anymore... LOL!!

Ditto on the plenum gasket. There's a whole set of bolts on the underside of the plenum plate, as well as the external bolts holding the intake in place. Yours sounds textbook. Opinions of difficulty vary, but it's easier than the early Magnums since they had the additional hassle of the EGR.
Hughes Engines offers a kit with upgrades that hold the gasket better, has all bolts, etc., in case you are so inclined.

If the plenum is in fact blown, you'll need to at least pull and clean the plugs you have in now. Replacing them may be in order.

I figure if I changed the intake gasket then the difficulty would not be much harder. I didn't think about the plugs Thanks, guys!

Is this something that will tear more up if I have to wait to fix a few days?

Wellllllll....I spent most of the day replacing the plenum gasket/intake gasket. buttoned eerything up, started her up and antifreeze is pouring, I almost lost it...Peedoodlum says, that's a lot of antifreeze...you sure you clamped all the hoses?
After checking all hoses, I realized I never clamped the by pass hose... LOL!!!
