Default Ram 3.0-liter turbo-diesel DOHC V-6 ??

Ram 1500 Diesel engine

According to Allpar, the truck here boasts a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel DOHC V-6 sourced from Fiat subsidiary VM Motori SpA.

If that engine sounds familiar, it should: its the same diesel engine offered in the European-spec Jeep Grand Cherokee, and will be offered in North American Grand Cherokees for the 2013 model year.

The engine is more than up to the task of hauling the Ram around town. In Grand Cherokee guise, the engine produces 237 hp at 4000 rpm, and a stout 405 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm. According to VMs spec chart for the A630 engine, thats about as much torque as the DOHC V-6 can crank out, but its maximum power can be increased by roughly 10 hp. Compared to the 2013 Ram 1500s new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, the VM V-6 is shy about 40 hp, but offers nearly double the torque something pickup owners could appreciate when hauling cargo or towing heavy trailers.

Pretty cool. But does that mean the pentastar in the ram will only have around 277 hp? Seems kinda weak compared to ford with 305

The problem with diesels in a 1/2 ton truck is every idiot with no diesel experience will think they now have a 1 ton truck and will overload them and have issues.
I can't tell you how many travel trailers and 1/2 ton trucks I've seen wadded up in a pile at the bottom of hills because the trailer was too big for the tow vehicle. The general populace is kinda stupid when it comes to towing stuff...I just see them thinking they have "diesel power" now and they can tow anything they want....

^that's a good point. Do you think it'd still happen being it's a v6 deisel and not a big engine? I love diesel it's definitely the way to go.

I used to have to drive a 6 yard, 10 wheel dump truck, & a 8 yard PUP trailer
It was a 225 Ford Diesel with a Allison transmission
it would have been a good vehicle, but it had lousy geared rear axles
the company that i worked for got a great deal on buying, they had been special ordered & the that company back out of the deal

The new Chrysler engine is a bit bigger, at 237

wasn't the last gen Cummings a 6 cylinder? I don't see what difference the new engine being a V6 will make...

Yeah but this is a small 3.0 v6. The cummins isn't that like a 5.X or 6.X L engine? Twice the size.

All the cummins in the ram are straight six. But they're 5.9 and 6.7 liters making upwards of 300 hp and 500 torque from the factory(currently 350/800 with autos and 350/650 with manual)

Yes, the Cummins is a 6 but definitely should not be classed with what this engine is. Huge difference in power and probably even power potential. Any word on what kind of mileage to expect outta this motor? I would think mid to high 20's would be a must to make up for the added expense of running diesel.

especially with the '13 pentastar 8 speed combo rated at 25mpg on the hwy.
