Default Rear diff bearings and pinion shot after 1k miles with mopar lift

Last month I was finally able to get the 4 inch Mopar i.e. Superlift kit and 35 inch tires put on my '09 4x4 crew and it looks awesome. Last week I noticed that when letting off the gas at 30mph+ I'd hear a whining/humming noise like something was winding down. I crawled under the truck and noticed there was rear diff fluid slung all on the gas tank and the underside of the truck. I took it into the dealership who installed the lift and they said that because of the higher driveshaft angle from the Mopar lift it was causing an extreme strain on the 3.55 rear end and sheared out the bearings and pinion which I find extremely odd considering I've put maybe 1k road miles on my truck since the lift was installed. No offroading yet, but that's about to change now that duck season is coming up. I have 66k miles on my truck now, lift was put on at about 65k. Luckily they replaced it under the factory lifetime power train warranty, but my service rep said that it will more than likely strip down again in a month and recommended I get 3.92's installed. I had though about it previously so I asked how much $$$ to which he replied $3k..... Uh, yeah no, fix it under warranty for now and I'll take my chances. I've scoured the intercrons and wasn't able to find anyone else experiencing the same problem. I even called superlift and asked them if they've heard of this issue since it's their lift and they said that was BS. So..... I wanted to put the feelers out to get some other opinions/experiences/knowledge from the community. My personal research/opinion leads me to believe that the bearings and pinion were probably going bad and maybe the lift was the straw that broke the camels back, but I don't think that it could completely strip out after 1k of normal road miles.

So please.... cuss and discuss..

I have a lot of experience with the 9.25 rear end in stock trim and I share the same opinion as Superlift, which is to say I call bullshit on the service advisor and/or technician. I don't care if you have 3.21 gears, that isn't going to happen as they claim. Given the history of these rear ends for chewing up bearings, I also suspect that they were on their way out.

I agree with RamTech in that just recently Chrysler issued a Recall #M34, for certain 2009-2010 Rams for a rear pinion nut retainer coming loose and causing bearing to rear end failure. Your lift was not the cause most definitely bud. Your truck's VIN number is probably listed in the range for this recall.

Neuman, just call a dealer with your VIN number and they can tell you if your truck is involved.

+1

my rear end had to be rebuilt under warranty too..prior to me doing any modification (levelling the front). stock truck still required it...there are alot of guys on here with premature rear end failure on the 4th gen without any lift/modifcations.

Just found out a coworker of mine has a relative that does fleet purchasing and management for a construction company and they are removing all half and 3/4 ton rams from their fleet rotation and going strictly to GM's and Fords because of, amongst other things, repeated issues with the rear ends prematurely burning out. So I'm hoping my rebuild holds out for a while. If not then I'll just upgrade to an after market 3.92 and get a 4x4 shop to take care of it instead of the dealership. It'll void my warranty on the diffs but I don't care cause I'll make sure to get a Dana or other heavy duty diff that should never have a problem.

Now they've issued a bigger recall and mine is on the list. And yes, I will be taking it back in even though it's been rebuilt.
