Default tranny slip not shifting...options.

i have an 89 d250 318 tbi with the 727 2wd 154k .id like to swap over to a 5 speed but ive been told only the 4 speeds will marry up.is an auto more practical?this truck will be getting a cummins 12v with a 5spd within a year anyway so i figured get the tranny out of the way with a nv4500hd and call it a day till the straight sixxer goes in. input would help, i dont make the smartest decisions on my own. the nv3500 is not going in my truck bottom line.

5 speed stick or auto? Either way, you were told wrong. Your engine bolts to the same stuff used with the Magnum V8's so no problem there. At most you'll need to have the pilot bushing installed into the end of the crank for the manual trans pilot shaft. The bellhousing for the Cummins and gas V10 are different than the V8's. The HD model has a slightly larger input shaft (both are 10-spline) so keep that in mind for clutch choice. I believe the output shaft is also bigger so that will affect figment of the driveshaft. Seems like you'd do less work just slipping another 727 in there til you're ready for the Cummins.

good to know and me and my buddy talked about this and came up with the same decision to wait until the cummins goes in then change it all once

Don't know if you ever got it resolved or not, but all things being equal and in good repair, the B&M Transpak IS your friend!

I'm installing one in my lifted '92 RC, because it holds low gear longer, and the shifts are firmer - all of which are a necessity in LIFTED trucks, and NICE to have in older, 'lovingly worn' trucks.

They make 'em for 727's and A518's, and for $75 +/-, it's worth a try over a transmission tear down!
