Default oil pressure

on my way to hunt tonight my oil pressure dropped to 0 but went right back up, it has done that before but it just needed oil so on the way home it was fine but i stopped and got two quarts and the dipstick said it was perfect, so i started it up and it immediatly dropped back to zero, so i reved it and it went back up to 40 but then everytime i stopped it would go back to 0 and i would have to rev it up the oil was 2.98 a quart and looked really crappy, but im broke, anybody know whats wrong?

Not offhand. You first need to stop revving up an engine that's showing no oil pressure until you can verify the problem. Start by attaching a mechanical gauge and verifying whaty our electrical gauge is telling you. If your pressure is dropping to zero, then it's time to pull the pan to investigate. It sounds like you may have a clogged pickup or faulty pump at this point but worn out bearings could be a cause.

I had a similar issue with my 5.7L Hemi, and it was a bad sending unit. Apparently this is a common fault with these motors. Good Luck!

my 5.9 had the same issue when i came to a stop...+ 1 on the faulty sending unit. cheap fix..start there...and ramtech is right..dont rev it! seems everyone thinks revving a motor is a miracle cure all!
