Default Oil Change interval

I had the dealer's quick lube do an oil change at 2800 miles, and changed to synthetic oil. That was about two weeks ago. Over the weekend, a notice came up on the display that I was due for an oil change, and I have about 3200 miles. I thought the interval was 8000 miles. Any ideas what is going on? Dealer is closed because of Hurricane Sandy, and probably won't be open tomorrow, or later, if we loose power.

You were early so they forgot to reset the light. You can do it yourself.

Usually your light is on for an oil change when you go in on time. A lot of oil change places forget to reset it if its an early oil change.

1)Turn your ignition to "On" without cranking the Ram's engine.

2)Depress the gas pedal (completely to the floor) three times within 10 seconds, allowing the pedal to extend backward each time.

when you go out to your Ram
turn on the key, do NOT start it
now press the gas pedal down, 3 times in about 10 seconds, turn off the ignition
now look to see if the light is off
if it is not, then try again, i believe you can also find it in your owners manual
i know it makes boring reading, but it is good to read while killing time
one subject at a time

I will give that a try, but isn't the interval 8000 miles, and if so, why would the warning come 5000 miles early?

LOL
that is a good question
i believe your interval is 8,000 miles using dinosaur oil
if it was a taxi or did a lot of towing, it shortens the mileage interval

Based on engine operation conditions, the oil change
indicator message will illuminate. This means that service
is required for your vehicle. Operating conditions
such as frequent short-trips, trailer tow, extremely hot or
cold ambient temperatures, and E85 fuel usage will
influence when the “Change Oil” message is displayed.
Depending on operating conditions, the message may
appear as early as 3,500 miles (5 630 km) since last reset.
Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within
the next 500 miles (805 km).

NOTE:
• The oil change indicator message will not monitor the
time since the last oil change. Change your vehicle’s
oil if it has been six months since your last oil change,
even if the oil change indicator message is NOT
illuminated.
• Change your engine oil more often if you drive your
vehicle off-road for an extended period of time.
• Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 8,000 miles (13 000 km) or six months, whichever
comes first.

Your interval is not 8000 miles. The vehicles computer has an algorithim to tell you when it is time to change. Many factors are taken into consideration on how you drive. It conceivably could come on after several thousand miles if all you do is short trips where your oil never heats up sufficiently.

If you read the manual, it states that oil should be changed after 8000 miles even if you don't get a prior message. In other words 8000 is the max.

Thanks for the good thoughts. Made out well, got power back, everything OK, but the gas situation is pretty amazing, fights, a couple of guns, a knife, deliberatly hitting another vehicle that was trying to cut into line.

The dealer confirmed how to reset oil change warning,it works, and didn't have a complete answer as to what the oil change interval is, 8000 is max.

Overall life is good, the people along the Jersey coast and the Long Island coast, well, let's just say we should all donate to the RED CROSS to help out all we can.

The dealers are trying to move everyone to a recommended 3k mile interval but are sure at telling everyone their manual says 8k max. Even with synthetic which usually is 5k its still recommended every 3k. Dealer here (not the one I'm at) is getting sued for telling customers it has to be done at 3k for warranty when their books say 8k max on standard penzoil.

back in the 80s & 90s, oil had a much different formula than todays oil
back then we changed oil every 3000 miles
of course dealerships want you to change oil at 3000, its profit for them

Almost everyone that i know changes oil at 5000 miles, whatever brand vehicle they own
they also use a quality oil filter, not the 4 or 5 dollar ORANGE, black & white boxed one, that you see on the shelves of every automotive place
