Default Confused on whether or not my key has a chip in it.

Hey guys I have a 2008 Ram that has a black key fob with the unlock, lock and panic button it. I lost one of my keys and needed to get a spare made, but some sites are saying that I need to have it programmed because it has a chip in it. Is the chip in the fob or something because it looks like a regular key except attached to the fob. If I buy a key fob off ebay and take it to the hardware store to cut and match the one I have now.... will it not work in my ignition?

go to this website
https://ikeyless.com/

don't buy a previously used FOB, it has to be brand new, never used

some hardware stores, like maybe ACE Hardware, may have the equipment to program a key

otherwise you have to pay a dealership the fee

if i were in the market for a new FOB, i would buy it from Ikeyless & see if there was also a transponder key for the truck as well
It wouldn't have the buttons, but it would open the door & work in the ignition & they are really inexpensive

by the way,
the FOB can either have RAM or DODGE molded into the case
the dealership sells the FOB with Dodge written on it for less then the one with Ram on it & they are exactly the same in every other way

Thanks for the info. I checked out that site and see this one
https://ikeyless.com/vehicles/Dodge/.../2008/1000424/

but then Amazon has this one as well
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A26SMXYYWR0U0V

The Amazon one is 75 dollars cheaper.......do you think they are the same or should I go with the 100.00 one?

Also I see this one
https://ikeyless.com/vehicles/Dodge/.../2008/1004724/
I dont understand why this one wont work in the ignition if the key fob that I have now works on door and ignition.

If you have both fobs you can program a third with the system but if you only have 1 fob or key then you have to get the dealership to program it

I would call a local lock/key place to see what they can do for you. Many of them have the keys and programming capability. I bought a new uncut key fob from ebay for my 07 and had a reputable lock & key place cut and program it for me. Much cheaper than what the dealer wanted.
