Default 1994 2500 AT Fluid Loss

1994 2500 SLT Laramie diesel w/65k miles. Been in the family since 1995 so I know how it's been treated. No automatic transmission problems before but yesterday, decided to change fluid & filter since it had been a while. Refilled trans to correct level with engine idling, trans hot and in neutral. Test drove and everything was fine. Went back out today and drove around - now the trans is slipping & surging. Rechecked AT fluid level and it was low so I topped it back off and took another drive just for fun. Rechecked AT fluid and it was more than one quart low again. Nothing leaking but the engine oil level is higher than I left if and it smells faintly of AT fluid. Don't know how the AT fluid could get into the engine oil (coolant still not effected) but there is an unidentified canister mounted to the block under the turbo and there are trans lines going into it. Any thoughts on where the AT fluid may be going?
