Default I could use a little advice on something

I'm in process of installing an aftermarket back up camera and having a strange issue that I cannot figure out. Before I started I checked all the components in the cab and had no issues at all. I used the cigarette lighter as a power source and a direct video cable from the cam to the monitor. Installed everything in place and ran wires. I powered the camera off the reverse light and grounded it there as well as other spots. The monitor was as originally hooked up in the cab.

Here's where the problem starts. The monitor only flashes on and off as if it is not getting a signal. I'm wondering if the power that is on the camera is just not strong enough to turn it on and maybe that is the problem. I've just pulled the insulation off the wire direct into the bulb and connected there. Any other ideas as to where/how to hook up the power source for the cam? I suppose I could somehow work a toggle switch into the monitor, but I would like to not have the cam constantly on which I imagine will sooner than later burn it out.

I should add I tried the direct wire with an additional vid cable as well as some wireless signal receiver/transmitters and got the same result in every way. I disconnected it all and checked it again in the cab and full strength and wonderful. Kind of at a loss and the "customer support" for the camera company is basically a answering service to leave a message so I have no hope they will call back. I'd appreciate any input.

Try a DC relay triggered by the back up light and switch a different source of power to the camera through that. Power for backup light might not be enough to power new camera.

Yeah I have come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to run a relay. Now to figure out how to run one and trigger it off the reverse lights.
