Default FRAM PH16 tappet sound at start up

Hi,

I guess this is a bit of an FYI/confirmation re. FRAM filters. I've read about this situation (tappets at startup that quiet after engine running for a short while) on the net... did not believe it as I've used FRAM filters for at least a dozen change outs... but... live and learn.

I recently did an oil change on my 1500 (1998, 5,2 litre/318 170,00km). I used a FRAM PH16 filter purchased at Canadian Tire and used a 10/30 High Mileage oil. NOTHING new here as I have used the same philter and oil on multiple changes over the last 40,000km. BUT... this time after oil/filter change I had the interesting experience of having tappet sound upon start up that faded after driving for more or less 10 minutes or so. Hmmm... so last week I crawled under again and did another change out using a NEW FRAM PH16 filter and another 5 litres of oil. SAME sound. OK... so... I was getting worried (and paranoid and doubting my sanity... like maybe the sound was always there and I just did not notice... haha). SO... once again under the truck this afternoon but this time with an ACDelco filter (from Lordco). The result? NO TAPPET sound. In my mind this lend some validity to the suggestions that FRAM filters can be a problem... but I can't make it "square" with the fact that I've used these filters for years without issue. WTH? Oh well... cross off the FRAM filter from my list of parts I like to buy. Sigh... I so liked the funky grip gunk on the bottom. Gonna miss that.

Anyone else encounter this sort of issue?

Many many many threads on this and other forums concerning Fram filters and they all say DON'T TOUCH THEM with a ten foot pole.
