Default 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie 4x4 Diesel - Good Deal?

Hey guys - I found a 5.9 Diesel which appears to be in decent shape, my only concern is it has 98k miles. I'm looking to tow an RV within the next 3-4 years (buy the truck first, RV second), but i'm concerned that by then it'll have around 160k on it (Should I be?)

What are your thoughts? Dealer is asking 29k which I think is a little high. But it's a one-owner truck and has a clean carfax.

Vehicle History report -> http://autocheck.dealer.com/cgi-bin/...KS26D86G242733

The dealer is about 2 hours away, so it would be a haul to go out. I'm not sure if I should continue looking or not.

Here are the pics.

I have always heard nothing but good things about that engine. People always seem to say 100k is just breaking it in. I can't comment on the price but I am sure someone with more experience with this truck will chime in. I personally am on the hunt for a 5.9 cummins to use as my DD because they can be modded so easy and again I have heard only good things about these.

Yeah - I did my homework and decided I only want the 5.9 engine as I don't want to have to deal with all the EPA crap they installed on the 6.7.

I think i'm more worried about the body and trans holding out more than the engine. I want to keep it for 15+ years and i'm usually really good with up keeping my vehicles. Since I won't have an RV until this is paid off, i'm looking at 160k miles / 10 year vehicle by the time that happens (4 years from now).

It is nice this vehicle only had one owner - makes me feel a little more comfortable about previous maintenance, but you never know.

I've been on the market for an 06-07 5.9 diesel for a few weeks now. The main issue i'm finding is they seem to be far and few between and the ones I am finding seem to sell within a weeks time.

I expanded my search, and found this one but it's 120 miles from my house so i'm trying to decide if it's worth the trip or not.

There were a couple with 50-60k miles, but then I think how diesels hate to sit plus those were mostly base models with little options.

It's a nice looking truck and I wouldn't worry about the miles, that engine will outlast the truck.
The price is high, but it's only a starting price. Realistic price should be closer to low to mid 20's. I bought my 07 6.7 earlier this year for $23,500 w/90K.
I would call them and feel them out a bit to see how firm the price it, just be cautious because (esp around here) because they might say whatever it takes to get you in there.
I wouldn't worry about the emission stuff, its a few bolts and a few plugs and they are no longer an issue, mine fell off while my truck was parked
And im pretty sure you you will be getting a programmer anyways. New exhaust and programmer (don't waste your money on an cai) would probably be bought for either truck (5.9 or 6.7), unplug the EGR and you pretty much have a bored/stroked 5.9 with an exhaust brake.

I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to that particular truck, and the CD's in general.

Here is what I would do. I would email the sales manager, requesting more info on the truck, let him know your situation, and that you're 100+ miles away. Throw him a stick on which to hold the carrot, tell him that you wish for him to make it worth your while to make the trip, ask him what his bottom line price would be on the truck.

When you get a response, print out the email, and if you're OK with the price set up a time to go see, drive, kick the tires, etc the truck. You will have a written record of what they're willing to sell the truck for, and they shouldn't try the ole bait and switch on you.

Good luck, and let us know how you make out

i have two 5.9s and i will tell you, the 5.9 cumins is th best engine ever produced. might be due for some maintainence , but that wouldn't stop me. by me, dealers have waiting lists for these trucks and they never hit the lot.

I paid about 20k for my 2004 last year with 102,000 miles on it. The price they are asking seems high, but I'd check with Kelly Blue Book and compare. It has some things going for it compared to mine, its got a few less miles, its a newer model year(they made some improvements), and it looks like its a Larimie. The Larimie is really nice.

It looks like the truck is from New York, so I'd take a really good luck for rust, the rockers, bottoms of the doors, and over the rear wheels. Check for blowby by taking off the oil cap and seeing if it puffs smoke. The front ends are known for falling apart, take a look at that and how it drive. Also check the tranny. With a stock motor, the 48RE holds up well, but if its been modded, the tranny can go in a hurrry. Just looking at the photos, it looks fairly stock, which can be hard to find.

There seems to be a sweet spot for used Cummins. 10 years old or less, somewhere between 60,000 and 120,000 miles. People want them and they can be hard to find in my area. I bought mine about a year ago, and love it so far. I'll tell you that is maybe one of the best years ever for the Cummins you are looking at.

Overpriced for the year and mileage. My 08 with 35k miles says private party is just around 33k and trade in is 29k.

Where do you live? I am selling mine for 32k, fully deleted (no EPA crap) I average 17.5 mpg combined. It's immaculate (Big Horn cloth not leather)
