Default 98 Ram 1500 Tranny Pans

I have a leak in my tranny pan on my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD 318ci
I'm looking for a new pan to replace the old one. My question is can I use a universal pan as advertised on mny sites? Seems like the OEM cast aluminum are like $300 where as the universal steel ones are like $40.

Yes and no. The bolt patter comes from an earlier non-overdive model, so it will bolt up, but the overdrive models require a deeper pan for a couple more quarts of oil. For example, you most likely have the 46RE transmission, which can trace it's origins all the way back to the 3-speed 727. Same bolt pattern, same gasket. While the deeper overdrive model makes a nice deep sump upgrade on a performance 727, you don't want to use a standard 727 pan on the 46, even though the bolt pattern is the same. I don't think it'll fit anyway as the valve body on the overdrive model needs more room for clearance anyway. Before the overdrive model, we had to pay a lot more for a deep sump 727 pan, but now any OD pan works great on the pre-OD's. Just make sure it's for the correct OD model. There were 2 basic pan designs/ transmission designs from that period: the 904/500/42/44 (smaller) and 727/518/46/47 (bigger). They do not interchange pans between the two. So, now you see why it's yes and no. Those aftermarket aluminum pans have always been steep $$$ compared to stamped steel.

Id take it to a local metal fab shop and have em patch / weld it. You might pay 25 bucks for this instead of the $$$ for a new one.

I have a stock 46 re pan that is rust free for 25 bucks plus shipping. It will work on a 46 rh as well but will be deeper than the stock pan.

I looked at a few wholesale mopar parts sites and the tranny pans seemed like they were only around 45-50 bucks. I'm thinking of doing mine if I take the old one down to change fluid and filter since my current one is starting to rust pretty good.
