Default Overheating at times

My 2002 Ram 1500, 4x4, Quad, 5.9, (90k miles) overheats when I put any type of substantial load on it, like a trailer or a boat. However, otherwise, when the weather is cool (below 75 degrees) it does fine as a daily driver. Here are some related issues:

  • I lose about a gallon of antifreeze every two weeks or so, but I can't find any leaks, but I can often smell antifreeze.....and this is when the engine is running at normal temperatures.
  • I can't find any anti freeze mixed with the engine oil.
  • Thermostat is new and water pump and radiator seem to be operating normally.
Can anyone tell my what the problem might be? I was thinking I might have warped one of my heads, but again, I am not seeing a anti freeze mixed with the oil.

Thanks

You are probably burning the anti-freeze. I'd say either a blown head gasket or a cracked head. I don't know if the infamous plenum gasket would cause this. Gentlemen?

Start with the simple stuff before you go tearing into the engine. have the cooling system and cap pressure tested. This will reveal any leaks and/or a bad cap. I've seem caps that look to be in good condition allow a coolant loss similar to the one you describe.

You're not towing with overdrive on, are you? Ditto on radiator cap. Hopefully not a cracked head, but it's on the list.
