Default Complete differential failure due to pinion nut.

Well, good thing I'm a car guy and know what gear whine sounds like.

Had my RAM in a few months ago for a leaking pinion seal. Had them check the nut - said he snugged it up. Whatever that means.

Three months later, I start getting gear whine/whirring a day ago. Drove it to the dealer last evening (noise got progressively worse).

Dealer called me back today to tell me what I already knew. Problem is, they don't even have notice of the recall yet from Chrysler (the M34 recall for pinion nut). So, their solution was to order a new gearset and replace them, the shims, everything. I said that's not going to work.

On the phone with Chrysler corporate right now. Will let everybody know how it goes.

So far, Chrysler is telling me that the initial build date range they sent out in the M34 recall may be broadened. Well yea, I'd think so - my truck was 4 months beyond that build date range and this is the second diff issue I've had.

More to come.

They're right about the status of the M34. What is it you want done instead of rebuilding the rear end?

Their solution was to rebuild it, and not put the "retainer" on the pinion nut because they don't have access to the recall yet.

I'd like a new differential because I don't trust that they'll rebuild it correctly. I took my vehicle there a couple times when it was new because they gave me an oil change package (I normally do it myself but it was free so...) and they couldn't even manage to use the right oil and not get the inside of my vehicle greasy.

So, I don't really have faith that they'll rebuild it properly. If that's the best I'm going to get, then they at least need to add the retainer to the nut, which they can't seem to do right now because the recall is technically not announced yet.

Understood. I would ask them to install some locktite until the recall comes out. This should help with the problem. I also understand your misgivings about them doing the work but keep in mind that the lube bay guys that did your oil change are not the same ones that would rebuild the differential in your truck.

I hear ya - good point. They have it torn apart right now but are waiting on a call from the Chrysler case manager to see how they are going to proceed. I guess I'd be more comfortable if there was a better way to retain the pinion nut other than loctite, know what I mean. I guess I don't have much chance of getting them to replace the whole unit with one from a 2011, huh?

I looked at the NHTSA ( National Highway Traffic Safety Association ) website & the
http://www.safercar.gov/ , both are Federal Government websites

at Safercar, you insert your vehicle info & follow the prompts
you will see that the file # is still open on the pinion nut

also if you follow the complaints by case or file number, the Q & A even goes so far as to name the number of complaints, the speed that it occurred at, & what the result was

check all the PDF files
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...21&docType=INV

Where in NJ are you? I'm in Cherry Hill. I had both 87 Turbo T and 87 GN bothe sold into boats now (bigger money pits!)

At what mileage did you start having the rear issues ? What dealer?

Mike

Hi Ram Tech, I have a question directly related, my truck falls within the recall, I had a shop locktite and peen the edge of the pinion nut last spring for fear of what could happen. What do you think their reaction will be when they see the pinion nut peened in two places?

Well I am now on diff failure #3 as of yesterday. Truck back in the shop. Christ I'm glad I don't tow the bass boat with this rig - I'd be on differential #9 now. This is failure #3 in 85k miles.

Waiting for verdict from dealer but betting on pinion bearing again.

Oh by the way I have my recall letter but no parts available yet. Hate everybody.

I received the RECALL letter yesterday
had my name & VIN# typed out in the notice

Strange thing is it specifically reads 3.92 ratio, i have the 3.55 ratio ???

It also reads that some Rams did not get the retainer patch that holds the pinion nut in position
