Default Rear engine coolant leak???

Hello all,

I have a leak that has not been addressed in any thread yet (that I can find anyway). A few weeks ago, I noticed that coolant was dripping from the front of the bellhousing on my 97 2500 (auto). Further inspection also revealed that it is also the whole way back to the trans pan.

I checked the freeze plugs-they look like crap, but aren't leaking. I can't see any fluid leaking from the bypass hose/t-stat/front engine area either. I replaced all hoses/heater core/pump/ flushed coolant system in the Spring.

The beast doesn't overheat- yet. It doesn't leak a whole lot, but it is enough that I need to top it off every couple of weeks. I was thinking it might be the intake manifold. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Plenum (intake) gaskets go out ALL the time in these trucks. It would be worth the replacement even if it didn't fix the leak. Did you check the fittings on the trans?

you can't see the freeze plugs on the back, unless you pulled the tranny. This is the most common issue with this motor. The only way to see it and fix it is pull the tranny.

Thank you both for your responses.

I did check the trans lines...they are fine- the leak is definately antifreeze.

Kccode1: I did not know there were freeze plugs on the back of the block-thank you for that info. Is it possible to see them with a mirror? I just hate the idea of pulling the trans. to fix a stupid little (for now) leak.
