Default First tow report .. Ram 1500

Finally made my first trip towing with my 2012 Ram 1500. I have 3.55s which were NOT my choice but the truck was a great deal and I only tow once or twice a year 200 miles each way but I have 2 big grades to climb on the way home. I have air bags mainly to level the truck after loading the bed and a WDH pulling a 22' ~8500 lb toyhauler.
This truck does NOT pull my trailer as effortlessly as my problematic F150 Ecoboost did but the smaller hills and flats were no problem. The big grades certainly tested the truck. My oil temp got to 259 on the longest pull and the tranny 212 and this was a cool night. *note to self to add oil cooler* Gas mileage at 55-60 mph was right at 7 mpg
If I was going to tow regularly I think I'd look for a better set up but twice a year I can live with it. I may install 4.10s when available and I will put an engine oil cooler on

Default towing

X231-
I have the same drivetrain in my 2009, hemi and 3.55's. I have towed my 33' Jayco (7240 loaded) for over 25000 miles now and have no complaints. My other tow vehicles had 3.73's so when I bought this truck I had some reservations. My first trip out I was extremely impressed with how it towed. Granted some of the higher mountain passes, (I live in Colorado) would require a lower gear than I had been used to using in the old trucks the power of the hemi pulled better than any of the others and I have yet to find a mountain that I cant pull at the speed limit. Maybe getting used to the higher gearing will take a little while but overall I think you will like it. 25000 mile tow average is 9.3 mpg.

My trailer is an ultralight, 4000lbs for right now, so fully loaded I can't see being more than 5k with water. I too have the 2009 SLT with 3.55 gears, but I do have the tow package. I haven't actually towed anything yet I just know that my old 2000 GMC Denali with the 350 was 255hp and about 310lbs of torque. So I am expecting better performance from this Dodge. I was kind of worried about the 3.55 gears at first, but I think the HP and Torque will more than make up for it. If not, it will be a simple re-gear. I used to average 9.5 towing with my Denali and I really expect no different results. Whenever you are dragging 13k+ down the road, something has to fuel it

I have a 11 1500 with tow package and I tow a 5000 lb camper and it has NO issues. 8.5-9mpg with a leveling kit. 3.55 gears thats running 70-75mph. I just hang it in the wind and go. I babied it on the first trip @ 250 miles and 10mpg.

I pull a 30' travel trailer several times a year (i race motorcycles) and fully loaded its around 7000lbs. I have a 2012 CC with the Hemi and 3.55's and it pulls it great. Before that I had a 2009 Escalade with the 6.2L in it and it struggled to pull my trailer even on flat terrain. So much so that the towing problem was the main reason for switching over to the Ram. Trust me it's hard giving up luxury for towing capability but I needed it. I was none the wiser about gearing when I got my truck, I saw the one I wanted with the options I wanted and bought it. I think depending on what you haul the 3.55's will get the job done fine.

Absolutely agree. I pull heavy grades in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with my 3.55's and have no complaints.
