Default 17" or 22" Rims/Mags?

Guys,
I've just bought my first 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 Outdoormen truck. It came with steel factory rims that are hideous and good year wranger tires. I believe the rim size is R17. I'm looking to buy some rims next year but have never bought any and need some guidance. I'm thinking I want chrome mags and some sort or radial tire. I'm not certain which size though, need your guidance and where to pickup some good deals.

Thanks in advance!

If you want an off road tire, I prefer the 17" wheel due to the cost, variety and availability of tires for this purpose. 20" rims are also a good option for off road tires. IMO, 22's are best left for street use.

20's for off road and lifted.
17's for off road and stock height.
22's for street tire and lowered.

20's are pretty normal in off road tires so the cost isnt that bad. 22's and up he off road tires are more rare and very expensive.

Thanks guys, this has been very helpful. I think I'll be pursuing 17's or 20's, most likely the ladder. Do you guys know of some good internet sites to get some discounted tires/rims?

Discount internet sites offer great prices but the shipping can qucikly add up to the point that buying online isn't beneficial. I would find what I want, price both online and locally and then make a decision. I personally prefer to keep my money local whenever possible.

Also do some searching around on here for what kind of set-up people are running and how it looks.
What mods to you plan for the future (lift kit, level kit? etc) Knowing that will save you money in the future. If you are going to lift or level the truck you can go with a larger tire than if you keep it stock.
Another thing to consider when picking wheels is how you want them to fit.
Do you want them to fit like the stock wheels? Do you want them to sit flush with the fender? Do you want them to stick out slightly? What kind of tire are you planning on going with (all season, Mud tire, street performance?). Those answer will all play a role in what size wheel you go with, as far as width and offset goes.
Since you have time before you buy them, use it to find out exactly what look you want. Esp if you buy them online, make sure you know what specs you want before placing the order. Nothig would suck more than getting your wheels and having them not fit correctly.

I find that digging throught the pics posted on here is very helpful in deciding what looks good to me...then if you have questions you can ask that person about their set-up.

You're right. That Ram has a ton of potential.
First, I'd suggest you choose a direction or look to go with. Basically decide between an offroad and a street truck look.
