Default Fuel Pump

I just changed out the fuel pump in my 95 1500. After the change, I started the truck right up with no problems. I drove it around the block for 5 or so minutes and when I got back to my house the truck died suddenly. It started back up just long enough to get it into my driveway. Now it won't start. The new fuel pump is kicking on as I can hear it when I turn the key. Any ideas of where to look now? Also, when I purchased the pump, I tried to get a filter for it. I was told that there is no servicable fuel filter for this truck. Could I have been mislead and this is the issue?

Rock Auto lists one for your truck for $25.

I researched this a little, and found that there is indeed a filter listed on rockauto, however, it appears generic. Looking on Autozone, there is no listing for a fuel filter, however, they list a ?? POWER STEERING FILTER?? That one blew me out of the water! Anyhow, it too looks like a generic filter, and I am certain that neither of my trucks have either a fuel filter or power steering filter. Lesson? I think this means that if you insist that a supplier provide something, their job is to provide it, whether it be pink tailpipes or steering filters, the nice thing about our society is that if you want it, someone can provide it!!!I would suspect that your new fuel pump is intermittant, whether from defective, or bad wiring connection. I would suspect a wiring problem, since you just went through the same problem. checking ground would probably be a good idea. Does the gauge work? Otherwise, for troubleshooting, a fuel pressure gauge is mandatory. I used to have a Jeep, and once I lost the impellers on the fuel pump, the pump ran fine, but no flow from it. (Sometimes I think these trucks should have come with a fuel pressure gauge in the glove box!) 35 - 40, and rock steady under all driving conditions, put the gauge under a wiper if need be and drive until it screws up, if need be. Low fuel pressure will not leave codes, so that doesn't help... Good luck!!

If the sock came off the bottom then that will cause your problem.

One of our members sonoctacio (Mike) ran across this problem a few months back and posted his problem, and believe it or not...the actual cause after installing a new fuel pump.

I think I even gave him Rep points, because pretty uch that's what they're for.

To definitively answer your question, no, there is no external fuel filter on your truck. Filtration is via the aforementioned pickup strainer (or sock, if you prefer).

First thing first I guess. I'm going to drop the tank and make sure the strainer on the botttom of the pump is indeed still there. Good thing I didn't drive down to the gas station and fill it all the way up when I had the chance. I'll let everyone know what happens with it.
