Post Cruse Control acting up?

I have a 01 ram 1500 5.9L. This issue I am having with the cruise control has been getting worse but it has been doing this for awhile.

The issue is that when I have my cruise control on it will "skip/slip". I will be driving right along and then the motor will rev up like 100rpm " one notch on the tach and I will slow down. Then I will go back to normal it will do this once and awhile, not all the time. When it does this it will do it in about a half a sec. But I can feel it and hear it. I would think it is not with my drivetrain because I can disengage my cruise control and just drive with it off for as long as I want with it not "skiping/sliping". I have tried to make it happen I by just taping on the throttle when I am at highway speeds. But it will just accelerate like you think it would. So I thinking it might be a sensor or something like that but I don’t know that’s why I am asking for help. It would be nice to use the cruise control and not having to be worrie about ruining something being the rams are known for the transmission issues. That’s the last thing I want to put money in is the transmission.

Thank you for any and all advice.

I wish I had the answer to this, my 98 has been this way for ages. Only in cruise mode, not when using the foot accelerator, generally when topping a gentle rise in the roadway. Like a quarter of a second pop in and out of neutral, from o'drive. fluid level is fine, I cannot help but thinking about going in for a reflash of the ECU, (or some such), but it's off the road for the winter for balljoint replacement and body saving, my 95 is the sacrificial anode for corrosion this winter.

Its got to be the cruse control unit its self. But i am not going to pay some one to tell me whats wrong with it when i dont NEED it fixed. There is alot other places that i would rather put that money than in the cruse control! lol ya know!
