Sure would have been nice to hang around for 20 to 25 years, and have the sweet pension and bennies for the rest of my life. The pension is usaully not enough to live off, but it sure helps when you get another job.
Yes I remember Beirut. THANKS FOR SERVING.
Have you noticed that the person who started this thread never has shown up again on it so we just turned it into a general chat thread.
I have a lot of friends that served in Vietnam in the USMC. I grew up were the Navy had the largest ammo dump in the world. It supplied the entire Pacific Fleet from WWII - Vietnam. Then supplied a large amount of ammo in the Gulf War. In 1975 the Army took it over. Guys with short time after Vietnam were offered MP duty in Hawthorne. So I grew up with Marines.
Plus I worked with a couple of Recon guys.
My eyes kept me out of the service in the 60s. I showed up for my draft physical in Oakland & when I hit Station 11 the doctor said your eyes are too bad you are classed a 1Y. I asked what is a 1Y & the Gunny standing there said kid your going back home & escorted to the front door.
They were drafting into both the Marines & Army.
