Default 2005 dodge 1500 wont hold cruise

Hello this is my first posting here because I cant seem to find an answer on the internet to my issue.

1) I recently bought a 2005 dodge 1500 quad cab 4x4 with a 4.7l at auction. I noticed on the way home that the truck will not hold cruise setting on the highway. It accelerates fine shifts smooth drops into OD (about 1850rpm at 65 mph) I set the cruise and it will hold if for a few seconds then the speedo starts to drop and I can feel the accelerator going further and further to the floor till it up shifts to 3000 to speed back up then back down to OD and it will bounce back and forth from there. If I just use my foot I can maintain 65mph in OD all day long but I am getting tired of this. The only time it will stay in OD with cruise is with a tailwind. I have checked fluid that is it. Any ideas??

2) Gas mileage is HORRIBLE!!! 12-13mph Is this normal with a 4.7l engine. My hemi of the same year got 17 all day long. Anything I need to be looking at here to improve this.

Thanks for any information

No clue on the C control. Check fuses also just to be sure.

As for the gas mileage I would pull the spark plugs to see if they are toasted. Also run some sea foam into the car and engine to clear out the injectors. Youtube has videos on how to use sea foram if your not familiar with it. Also check the air filter to make sure there is not 398550584 pounds of dirt and dust clogging your filter. keep in mind engines need 3 things to run. Air, Fuel, and Fire. start checking each one of those. air filter, sea foam for fuel flow and injector cleaner and spark plugs for the good fire. toasted spark plugs really play a huge difference in performance.

Also check and clean your MAP sensor (some people call then MAF) these can some times get dirty and hinder performance. I would also go the extra route and change all plugs wires and coils and give the throttle body a good cleaning. Basically a good tune up. I been noticing the same thing with MPG starting to drop. Plus its good to know those are done so they wont be a problem down the road.

Also i would get a copy of the Factory service manual and Parts List (parts list in an exploded view). They can in invaluable in helping track down your cruise control issue. I can help you obtain a copy of both if needed. just PM me.

Cleaned the map sensor will pick up some plugs and change them over. If I have a coil issue wouldnt I have misfires and engine codes popping up?

Any suggestions on the tranny?

How many miles? Have you ever had the trans serviced? I can feel when mine is due, shifts fine but gets sluggish in OD. Just a guess. I would look for any air or vacumn leaks too.

My mustang GT has a similar 4.6 L V8. Stick shift. I noticed my MPG dropped off bad. The car seemed fine and ran fine tho. Sometimes when I gunned it or poured on the coals I would notice it would stumble and fall and stagger a lot. The car was not throwing any codes. My mechanic told me that it is one of my COIL ON PLUGS or COPs. The problem would come and go. Sometimes it would get up and haul ass and sometimes it would stumble on its face trying to pick up speed.

I ordered an all new set of 8 NO NAME coil packs on ebay. All 8 brand new cost me 69.99 with free shipping. I replaced all 8 because determining what coil pack went bad would be a night mare. It fixed my problem and the car roared back into life with better MILES per gallon and no more hesitation. All this time the car never threw a code, or check engine light. I bet you that when you turn on the cruse control your COIL pack fails to send a good 100% spark to the spark plug and your vehicle recognizes this loss of power and automatically assumes you stepped on the brake / want to slow down and automatically disengages the cruise control. I bet it is fouled up burnt toasted spark plugs or a coil on pack sending a weak spark ( similar to the way the flint on a cigarette lighter wears out and does not spark well but still sparks) . replace both spark plugs and coil packs and go from there.

These should work out fine for ya mate. Please dont call the dealership for one of these. they will charge you 89.99 for just ONE! Ebay sells 8 of them for 100$ free shipping all day long. yes they may be a brand less name but they get the job done and do their job well. I can testify to them working flawlessly because I have had a set in my mustang for over a year and they work great.

Changed plugs and all coils and took it for a quick test drive and it seems a little better. Mileage computer still reading low. Done 2 seafoams through the gas tank. Going to get the trans flushed and serviced this week. Running out of ideas.
