Default drastic change in gas milage

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7. I am at 100,000 miles. I know I need a tune up.
I know I am going to lose some gas mileage because of the winter mix in fuel, but I went from 17 MPG down to 14 MPG. Also, I have went to start it twice now and it would not start. I had to floorboard the gas to start it. There has been a couple times I have smelled gas while driving down the road. Any suggestions?

Hi Lisa B!

I too have noticed my MPG's go down recently. I have the 5.7 Hemi and was getting a consistent 18-19 up untill the last month or so. Now its hard to crack 17.

I did put all new tires on though so that may have made a slight difference. Lots more grippy tread to drag along.

I have 85,000 on it and its never had a plug change though either. It still runs great and i hate to mess with anything that is running well.

The plugs in the hemi are regular copper plugs, which are typically good for 30k miles. I'd start by changing the plugs. Air filter as well, unless it was done recently.

When a fuel injected engine gets flooded you need to hold the pedal to the floor to open the TB to allow more air in. This is the opposite of a carb where you don't want to touch the pedal because it will add to the problem. I'm guessing the plugs are so worn down it's causing it to be hard to start and maybe for some reason holding the TB open helps it start easier. Also could explain the poor mpg.

A combination of dirty injectors and bad plugs can do exactly what you are describing. A tuneup and new plugs will help. Winter fuel is always a couple MPG hit as well.
