Default Christmas week project

I just thought I'd share my buddy's car that he's working on all week. He has a 2001 Z28 with an LS1 and some minor mods(long tubes, exhaust, intake, tune, etc). Roughly 375-400hp. It's a real nice car, and he's doing a lot of work to it this week. We pulled it apart last weekend and started building the motor, he's reusing the stock short block, new cam, new cnc ported patriot heads, new valve train, timing set and high volume oil pump. Also doing a 6 speed conversion at the same time and ditching the auto. He bought a ton of parts but mainly the upgrade is the extra ~100hp and the manual trans. Should have a lot of pictures by the end of next weekend, hopefully it's done by then.

Here's a teaser:

I think the word you're looking for is aggravating....lol

We came across several issues. The timing cover was cracked(not from us) and amazingly wasn't leaking oil. So he's trying to source a new one during christmas week so he can put it back together. The other option is to weld it but it is very thin, and we are not pro welders. I think he told me he found a plastic replacement from autozone that should be available today. There was also a strange clicking/tapping noise in the engine once it was fully assembled and he turned it over by hand. So tore it down again trying to figure that out. He thinks it might be a lifter catching on the bore(having a rough edge or something). Once those two issues are dealt with, the motor is done. Then to install the clutch and transmission which should be easy. He also has to cut a hole for the shifter in the floor, and in the firewall for the master cylinder. Also he is going to have to do some welding on one of the headers to patch a hole. He has a lot of work to do by the weekend, lol. I'll probably go back saturday or sunday to help lower the car back onto the k frame and bolt it all up, if it's ready by then. I, of course, would love to hear it fire up the first time.

Noise in the engine has been resolved. The timing cover came in and engine is fully assembled. The header is welded up and done. Just a few more things to do, he is going to put the engine back on the k frame today, install the transmission, master, and pedals, then tomorrow rewire the harness and finish up anything else needing done. Then sunday we will reinstall the k frame to the car and button it all up, then hope and pray it starts lol.

My buddy was running behind so I went to help him out for another day this weekend. Not sure if he finished it all today or not, waiting for him to call me back.

I cut the hole for the shifter, pic sucks(sorry....phone doesn't have a flash):

Here's what a budget build ~500-550 hp looks like:

LS1 short block with Patriot LS6 CNC ported heads(milled for higher compression), a cam(not sure on the specifics), SLP 1.7 ratio roller rockers, fixed long tube headers(needed a little cutting and welding to correct a bad angle causing the collector to hit the floor board), ATI super damper with 10% underdrive pulley, polyurethane motor and trans mount, T56 trans, stock LS7 clutch.

And here's what it looks like ~3 hours later:

When I left he still had to do the following:

Bleed brakes, install steering column, install center console, replace the shifter, hook up throttle, plug trans cooling fittings in radiator, hook up and bleed clutch lines, Install driveshaft, install torque arm, connect exhaust, and hook up misc electrical connectors such as alternator, battery, AC compressor...

I think that's it lol.

Just wondering what brand those rear ramps are...and how much weight they're rated for?

hehe, well....I believe they are made by Cemex... and being that the block have a compressive strength of ~1,900psi, they can probably hold about 7,441.67 lb each, evenly distributed.

I just talked to him, he said he just has to bleed the brakes, bleed the clutch, install serpentine belt, and put oil in the engine and it's ready to start. Well, ready to TRY to start lol.
