Default 200 klm speedo ?

Ok this is something i should know but i just got a 2011 ram 1500 5.7 i know its 390 hp so why is my speedometer max out at 200?. i had a 2005 mustang v6 and it was also 200 with only 210 hp.i would think the ram with much more hp would have a higher speed o. and i am in Canada.

Part of it is due to gearing and aerodynamics. factory set rev limiters, etc.
Also you would have a very difficult time getting insurance if the vehicle could reach
that speed easily, besides that max. speed limit is generally 110 kmh. which means that is as fast as you are legally allowed to go.

The only way to get to that 200 would be with a tuner. They have limited them so much that it is the only way to get more of the potential out of the motor.

Mainly because of the speed governor, it makes it impossible to go above 110. Also when your vehicle is capable of those speeds insurance companies jack up your rates. So by capping off the speed you get lower rates. With a tuner you can go above that, on a closed course with a professional driver my truck hit 126 according to the digital readout on the tuner... is what the driver told me

Laws and limiters. Every vehicle built in the US in the 80's (including my father's 82 vette) was fitted with an 85 mph speedo. Of course 5.0 Mustangs, Grand Nationals & Corvettes could go faster than that (in some cases not by much) but that's what the law was.

I'd say the reason your speedo only goes to 200 is because of aesthetics. You know you want the numbers, on the dial, a given size to make the easily readable and also, they like to make, whatever the normal hwy speed limit to be at about the 1 o'clock position.
