I have an 05 Ram and the place down the road from me has 10% for $3.17 and 100% pure for $3.51. Huge price difference. But if I need to use the pure, I'll switch. I love my truck and plan on having it for a long time.

I have a 2011 RAM 5.7l ST single exhaust. I have a Trinty monitoring ST/LT kn and saw a increase in kn after filling with 10% cause I was travailing. Truck did a double kick down while climbing a incline in cruise. This had not happened any on the trip to my destination. Still on the MPG tune running 89 oct but I'll try the 93 next cause there's no benefit to low octane that I can tell.

There are other reasons vehicles get worse MPG in the cold months but from the fuel end it is primarily due to the increased butane in the mix. Butane is very cheap so it helps the price but it has far fewer BTU's when compared with gas. Refineries will use up to 10% if they can but butane vaporizes too easily so in the summer they can only use about 2%. In the winter the lower temps allow the refineries to add more butane. It has the positive effect of lowering prices a bit but it's bad for MPG.

This doesn't make sense. First the octane rating of a fuel should be consistent no matter the blend. If you call it 93 then it's 93, ethanol or not. Sounds like something else is at issue or the 93 fuel you're buying isn't up to spec.

Correct on the ethanol, but it's a blend. Fuel with a 93 octane rating and 10% ethanol doesn't resist knocking anymore than a 93 octane fuel with no ethanol. If it did it would have a higher octane rating.

Short term/Long term knock

Short knock is only temporarily stored/adjusted by the pcm

Long term is stored/adjusted by the pcm over "long term"

Ok gotcha. Seems to me like it will knock to some extent no matter what(I've used several various tunes). I currently use a superchips 93 tune with 93 octane and it will retard timing as much as 6 degrees sometimes(heavy throttle/heavy load). I think going to 4.10 gears and lighter wheels/tires(less load) will help a lot.

I found a place not far from me that has no ethanol for just a few cents more on the gallon. I'll be filling up there now.

The gas station I pump up at has 87 and 91
beside the 87 there is a sticker that 'contains up to 10% ethanol
beside the 91 there is nothing. does this mean that only the 87 octane contains the ethanol?

Maybe, you should ask.

So there's only 2 choices? That's odd. Every station here has 3+ choices. (usually 87 and 93, then they mix the two for 89 and 91
