Default help! 4 wheel drive wont lock in!

My front axle wont "lock" into 4 wheel drive. the light on the dash used to come on and now it won't. Plus i know the front end isn't "locking in". I shift to 4 lo and you can tell the transfer case is reducing down but only the back axle is spinning out and you can tell there is no help from the front end.
Where do i start? is there something common that usually goes wrong?

Start out by looking at the vacuum lines going to actuator on the axle. Make sure you have no vacuum leaks. Report back.

Concur with PanHead, please spend an extra moment with the drivers side of the transmission crossmember, where the 2 tubes are connected to the orange silicone coupler pieces.

ill tell you what man... i just had this happen to me, before looking @ the most obvious things first, i was thinking transfer case, actuater switch, vacuum issue, anything... but then when i went to lift all 4 tires off the ground to see whats moving & whats not... i happened to glance @ the axle shaft on the driver side... i had sheered the whole area where the u-joint connects the axle shaft & wheel hub... im lookin @ about 400$ to replace it. i broke it trying too hard to get out of a ditch, turning the wheels too much (binding the axle) & rompin on the gas too hard in 4lo. not to say thats your problem, but a friend of mine said if you do what i did, theres a 90% chance that will happen. So check it out, look EVERYTHING over, make sure nothing OBVIOUS is broken or out of place. & good luck to you bro!
