Default New Member-Question about CAI's

Hello all! I just bought my 1500 Crew Cab 5.7 about a month ago, and I really like it...I've always been a Mopar guy (have a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger also). I love this forum...a lot of good info on here! I took my truck to the local dealer after I got it to see if there were any open recalls, which there were none, according to them (the exhaust manifold bolts had been done by the previous owner just before I got it). Truck runs fine, 45K miles, no issues so far (knock on wood), except for a little pulsating in the brakes at high speed, so I ordered ceramic pads and I'll put those on in the next week or two and have the rotors turned. I got 18.8 MPG driving it back from Missouri where I bought it, and that was including sitting in St. Louis for 25 mins. in stopped traffic, so I'm pretty happy overall with it.

I am looking into cold air intakes, and have seen some of the postings on here for others that have installed them. I am looking at the Spectre through Summitt:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sp...model/ram-1500

Pretty reasonably priced, and you can order different color filters. My question is, has anyone had issues with CAI's causing check engine lights, or reprogramming issues? Two guys I work with that own Fords said they both put CAI's on and it caused it to throw engine codes. One guy said his dealer told him the only way to solve it was reporgramming due to the change of air volume. (Then again, they're Fords...LOL) Has anyone had these type of issues? I'd like to know before I go down this road. Thanks!

You will be fine and shouldnt throw a code. A CAI will lean out the AFR but not so much that the PCM wont be able to handle it.

I don't know about CAI's...I already have almost 400hp, I don't need much more. The Factory airbox is very good. I put in $25 Spectre Air Filter, and saw some throtle response gains. Part # 889401

You can get them on the shelf at Autozone...damn near the price of the paper filters, it's a K&N knock off.

You should be OK. I've had a CAI installed in several vehicles, and the only problem that I had was once with a K&N I got a little pinging due to a crappy heat shield.

I would say with the set up that you're looking at, you might want to check the heat shield, as it doesn't look to be that great, then I could be wrong. I'm getting what I see from the Spectre website.

i just put in a 63 series CAI from K&N for my '11 ram sport - love it - good throttle response difference and nice deep sound at about 2500 to 3500 RPM.... worth every penny and easy install. ordered from Summit online - best price out there.

The stock OEM filter box is the best cold air intake....save your money. If you want a slightly better filter buy a drop-in Airaid. If you want more performance spend the money on a handheld tuner.

Got the Spectre CAI last week and put it in....pretty easy install. So far it's pretty good...I immediately noticed that it seems much easier accelerating, and the deep sound when you kick it down is pretty awesome! I have noticed a slight increase in mileage, but very slight. The next item is plugs, because I'm not sure they have ever been done and it just cracked 46K....also trans/diff/trans case flush and change is on the near horizon. It did set off my check engine light, but it was for the air flow sensor, and I didn't disconnect the battery before doing it, so a quick trip to Advance Auto Parts and reset it, and all is well.

for the trans i would do just a drain and fill with new fluid, i did 2 flushes on my 02 ram and about 90k the trans started acting funky. so far i haven't done mine yet, nor the plugs and im at 39K. I heard elsewhere that most guys that do the plug change at 30K dont really see any improvements once the new ones are in. Personally im gonna wait till 60K
